About

Its all in the name

I get asked a lot where I came up with such an interesting name for my little business. So here it is... the surprisingly simple story of Argaman & Defiance.

My first name, Lydia means 'the maker of purple dye'. That purple dye was described as Argaman, which translates from Hebrew as crimson. Growing up, my grandparent’s home was in Defiance, Missouri located near a popular Missouri nature preserve, Busch Wildlife Sanctuary. This is the place where I spent a good portion of my childhood learning, discovering, nature, which had a great impact on my artwork and designs.

I have been creating art and designing for as long as I can remember. In 2008 I received a generous scholarship to study at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). I focused most of my time at SAIC in the Fiber and Material Studies department where I quickly picked up a knack for natural dying.

Natural dying can be an expensive hobby. To supplement the expense of learning my new found love I tried selling the silk that I had spent the semester creating at SAIC's Holiday Art Sale. It was a huge success and lead to commission, representation in boutiques through out the midwest, a write-up in Timeout Chicago, featured on my Fox Chicago, and most recently landing on Chicago Magazine's Holiday Gift Guide!

The Argaman & Defiance studio is located in Chicago, Illinois. We love studio visits, coffee, and creating beautiful colors! For questions or to just stay in touch contact me at lydia [!at] argamandefiance.com.

CUSTOM ORDERS: Commissioning a custom order is the best way to create items for the perfect gift, or missing pieces from your wardrobe. Using your specifications, we will work together to create your ideal piece. Here is a quick look at the commission process.

Each commission calls for a new approach with each new design. I work best when I have examples/images/swatches to reference in the design process. The most important thing is that I understand your specific requirements. Clear communication is key to a successful custom piece.

Here are a fee points to get you thinking about your vision and what I need to begin work:
• Dimensions or detailed description of desired piece to be created. Images are always helpful.
• What fabric would you like this to be made from? Fine silk, raw silk, cotton…etc.
• Color. If outside the AD pallet please provide a physical paper color swatch from a hardware store. Contact me for my shipping address.
• Is this piece a gift? Does it need to be completed/shipped by a certain date?
• What is your budget? Did you include shipping and the $25(minimum) non-refundable custom design fee?

Before I can begin constructing the commission, a non-refundable custom design fee of $25(minimum), plus the retail value of the commission must be paid in full. The design fee is reassurance that all parties are committed to the commission. Take a look at A&D’s frequently asked question section to learn more.

FAQ

Q. How long does a custom order take?
A. Typically commissions will take a minimum of 4-8 weeks. Once the specifics are hashed out I can provide a more detailed timeline for completion.

Q. Do I have to pay for shipping?
A. Yes, shipping costs (and any custom fee or taxes for purchases made outside the US) are the responsibility of the buyer. I am happy to generate estimated shipping cost.

Q. Why do I need to make a $25 non-refundable custom design fee?
