Breaking the Barrier
When I was 12, I decided I wanted to be a teacher and pursued the avenue of art education after graduating from High School. Throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, I reached my goal as a public school art teacher. It was a great adventure for my students and me.
Because I didn't conform and fit into the institutional box, I decided to "retire" from that the Public School educational environment in 1992. I began teaching privately and subsequently founded a private art studio/school (Cygnet Studios, Inc) that thrived into the mid 2000s. Along the way I developed several other branches of business in art, music and lastly -- coffee.
My long-standing, community centered career which consisted of several successful businesses, was destroyed in 2011 partly through predatory placed businesses but ultimately through domestic violence. I was forced to flee and close my cherished company. The transition has been challenging; however, my return to creativity through craft is one way available to create a new career.
Here’s the good news!
