At Atomic Pad, we design and build architectural home bars and entertainment furniture rooted in the optimism of Mid-Century Modern living — pieces meant to bring people together, not just fill a room.
Before I was a furniture maker, I was an engineer. After earning a degree in Mechanical Engineering, I spent years in the Alpine ski industry developing new products alongside industrial designers — an environment where quality wasn't a brand promise, it was a survival requirement. A binding that fails on a mountain doesn't get a second chance. That obsession with structural integrity never left me.
When my wife and I moved to California and opened a vintage shop specializing in European imports, I found myself on the other side of that equation — studying why certain objects last and others don't. I repaired dozens of mid-century pieces over the years. I learned which joinery holds, which finishes age gracefully, which materials improve with time. Vinyl, for instance, is not just a nod to the era — it's a material that softens with warmth, ages beautifully, and brings a tactile comfort that cold surfaces never will. The metal trim unifies the form, and is the difference between a piece that looks finished and one that merely looks assembled.
Again and again, our customers were drawn to our vintage bars not just as furniture, but as gathering places. That observation became the foundation of everything I now design.
The Boomerang Bar — our signature design — was born from three constraints I set for myself: find a shape that is iconic to the MCM era, keep the footprint compact enough for a real living room, and arrange guests so they face each other rather than stare at a wall. That last one matters more than people realize. A bar in a straight line turns your guests into an audience. A bar with a curve pulls them into a conversation. The boomerang solved all three problems at once, and the shape has remained at the heart of Atomic Pad ever since.
My wife is always the first person to see a new design — and the most honest critic of it. Every piece begins simply, often sketched on the back of whatever paper is nearest, before moving through digital modeling, prototyping, and hands-on construction in my Los Angeles workshop. The goal is always the same: a piece that earns a place in your home not just on the day it arrives, but twenty years from now.
Whether it's a home lounge, a listening room, or a dedicated entertaining space, my hope is that every Atomic Pad piece carries a little of the spirit that made Mid-Century design timeless — the belief that thoughtful objects, made to last, make everyday life genuinely better.
