To Bead or Not To Bead?
One day in April 2015 as I was drooling over strings of beads and gemstones in a local hobby store, I found myself pondering the question....to bead or not to bead? I had found such satisfaction in making pieces of jewelry for myself. But should I jump into it wholeheartedly in an attempt to add some income to the farm?
Right then and there I dropped all feelings of inadequacy, loaded up my shopping cart, and "went for it!". So. Glad. I. did.
My husband, (the corn and soybean farmer) is so supportive of The Bead Farm. One day we went "pickin" in the sheds on our acreage and found an old barn door and other oldies but goodies. These old barnwood vintage pieces gave us just the look we needed for our Bead Farm theme. We turned one unused bedroom in our house into a combination workshop/ display room for my creations.
What's a typical day look like on The Bead Farm? I started out wanting to bead all day long but it didn't take long to see that playing in the beads was just one facet of this business. I have since settled into a pattern that is working for me. I use mornings and early afternoons to take photos of my newly created bracelets, post new listings on Etsy, shop online for supplies, fill orders, etc. I use late afternoons and evenings to do my beading work, often on the recliner within earshot of the tv. I love the flexibility that comes with owning and managing my own business!
