Beardbangs was formed in spring 2014 as a joint project between myself, Alicia Zwicewicz, and my husband, Josiah Henderson. The project was created to intertwine my love of pottery and drawing (BFA Concordia, 2014) with Josiah’s illustration experience (DEC Illustration and Design, Dawson College, 2010). The business has now become my full-time work, and continues to be inspired by the combination of our graphic styles and interests.

I enjoy designing and carrying through all aspects of production, from mixing colours to achieve the exact hue and value that I desire, to the continuous process of learning about kiln-firing techniques. Most of the pieces I create and sell are thrown on the wheel using a smooth, white stoneware clay, which I find ideal for my purposes in achieving simplicity of design and sturdiness. I apply the colour and shapes using hand-mixed engobes and a paper-resist technique. This colour is applied to the greenware in multiple layers, and the black detailing of the characters’ faces is painted by hand with underglaze. Finally, after the bisque firing I glaze each piece with a hand-mixed, food-safe transparent glaze.

My work is meant to be accessible, to be picked up and used every day, being not only completely useful to daily life but also brightening it. The aspects of this job I love most are seeing someone’s face burst into a smile as they walk past my display, and seeing adults and children alike connect to the bright colours and silly faces of my characters. I am inspired and motivated by these human interactions, and am also influenced by Scandinavian pottery and design, a retro aesthetic, and my family.

    Josiah is Alicia's lovely husband who studies theology and helps on a part-time basis in the design stages of the work. He came up with such wonderful pieces such as the turtle butter dish and the elephant mug.

Because of the nature of these items, unless they arrive damaged or defective, I can't accept returns for:
  • Custom or personalized orders
  • Perishable products (like food or flowers)
  • Digital downloads
  • Intimate items (for health/hygiene reasons)
Returns and exchange details
Please note that all of our work is handmade so there are always small variations between the product photos and the item you'll receive. If you really don't like what you've received in the mail, you are welcome to send back your order, but the customer must pay shipping on returns. The pieces must be wrapped exactly as they came to ensure no breakages happen on the return. The exception to this rule is when the product you purchase is defective (see below).

Shipping times are then as follows:
Within Canada: 1-7 days (includes tracking; timeline depends on how close you are to Toronto)
To the U.S.A.: 5-8 days (no tracking and timeline is an estimate)
International: 6-10 days (no tracking and timeline is an estimate)

Items that break in the mail or are defective: We do offer refunds for items that arrive to you chipped, cracked, broken or otherwise defective. For these occurrences, we ask that you send us a photo of your broken/defective item by message. Then we will either send you a new product (or one of similar value that you choose from our in-stock items) or a refund.

Items that get lost in the mail: If your order has not arrived eight weeks after it has entered the mail system, we will either replace the order or give you a refund.
Payment
You should be able to pay by all options here on Etsy. Please contact us if you are having problems. Orders can be cancelled within 24 hours unless already shipped.

*What is a pre-order and why does it take so long?*

We're now selling our work as pre-orders instead of made-to-order. That means we make products in batches of about 30 and can only make 1-2 batches each week. This is a much more efficient system and means that we can make more ceramics in less time. If the listing you're looking at ships in September, that means we have already scheduled other things to make for all the weeks preceding that date, and other customers have already paid for them. We are so honoured that many of your are willing to wait several months to receive your orders! If you ordered more than one item, the full order will be sent together when all items are ready (the date of the latest pre-order date), UNLESS you email me asking me to ship items separately as they are ready.

*When will my order ship?*

You can find that information in the product title and description.
"Ready to ship" items will be sent out in 1-3 business days.

*Can I get faster shipping?*

You can upgrade your shipping at checkout, but please note that this doesn't change the shipment date, only the time it takes once it has been put into the post. Options include FedEx or upgraded Canada Post with tracking within North America. FedEx guarantees delivery in 4 business days and includes a tracking number for both Canadian and US orders. Canada Post upgraded shipping guarantees 6 business days and also includes a tracking number (it's a little cheaper than the FedEx option). Prices for this upgrade are given at checkout.

*What about a tracking number?*

A tracking number will be given for Canadian shipments ONLY. Unfortunately we don't receive a tracking number for any international shipments. However, we do offer a refund if your order hasn't arrived 8 weeks from the date of shipment.

*My order hasn't arrived yet and I'm worried it got lost. What should I do?*

If you got a tracking number (Canadian or upgraded shipments) you can find that on your receipt to track your package. Unfortunately we don't receive a tracking number for international shipments. However, for all orders we do offer a refund if your package hasn't arrived 8 weeks from the date of shipment.

*Will I have to pay customs or duty fees?*
The customer is responsible for any customs or duty charged upon receipt. If you are concerned about customs fees you may want to look up a customs fee estimator for Canadian shipments to your country.
