The Creative Road to a Custom Sign Shop
The Palette & Ink story began during a recession when I was juggling 3 jobs and my husband had been out of work for almost a year. I impulsively painted a calendar on a window above my daughter's desk while she was on her honeymoon. Being a new bride with a busy photography business, I knew she would love a blank calendar and lots of lists to help her stay organized. When I posted pics of the calendar on social media, I unknowingly stumbled upon a little business opportunity and started creating calendars and chore charts on chalkboards for etsy customers!
WEDDINGS~ Palette & Ink shifted into the wedding business when I started doing photo shoot styling as part of my wedding photography job. I saw firsthand how beautiful signage can elevate an engagement session or wedding from simple to stunning.
CUSTOM CALENDARS & CHORE CHARTS- Nothing thrills me more than being beautifully organized, so I totally get where my customers are coming from. I home-schooled all three of my kids and pieced together 4 jobs simultaneously, so I know the importance of good planning systems and love turning organization into a thing of beauty.
THE ATELIER~ We are in the Bay Area, on a quaint one acre suburban "farm" outside of San Francisco. Four generations live here and we each have our own house and share a family vegetable garden, orchard and beehives.
We're blessed with an attached shop where Bob the Builder does the carpentry. We also have on-site storage for our frames, mirrors and packaging supplies. The hub is our sun-filled atrium filled with my grand piano, tons of plants and a two story tall fiddle leaf fig tree that grows right up out of the ground.
RECLAIMED, REPURPOSED & REMADE~ We're always on the hunt for vintage and upcycled frames, and make frequent trips to local flea markets and thrift shops. We embrace the little imperfections and natural patina that can only come from years of use. We proudly use as many recycled materials as possible when packing, and are thrilled to repurpose old materials into beautiful works of art. We'll paint a sign on just about anything requested!
TEAMWORK~ I started the business with Bob's help. He's a master carpenter and custom stair builder and a rare artist at his craft. We added Nichole as our primary artist and she now works from home so she can care for her growing family. Raimee also works from home while caring for her two boys and is a highly gifted administrator. We all enjoy creating together as a team and have a great work flow that allows them to put their family first.
LET'S CONNECT! We take particular pride in connecting with our customers on a personal level, determining their unique style and needs, and going step by step through the creative process together. I try to envision where their signs will be placed and how they will function. Our designs evolve from a collaborative process that produces a one-of-a-kind design every time. When you receive your sign, we truly want it to take your breath away and absolutely thrill you!
INSPIRATION~ Our work is inspired by two things. #1. I really get a thrill from the creative side of wedding design. It's important that our signs help tie the entire wedding day together, from the invitations, colors and venue choice to the flowers, paper products and even the menus. We are thrilled to help tie it all together cohesively and help create a perfect, one-of-a-kind wedding day that reflects each and every bride and groom! And #2, what works in my own home- I NEED fun & creative organization in my life!

Shop policies
GREEN SHOPPING: In an effort to reduce waste, we use as much recycled packaging materials as possible so your package may or may come in a pretty new box. Many of our pieces were previously owned before we "rescued and recreated" them into new pieces of art. We embrace the little imperfections found in used and vintage materials that give old items their unique personality, and hope you do too! RECYCLE. RENEW. RE-USE!

Returns and exchange details
In the rare event your item arrives damaged, we will recreate your sign if possible or refund your purchase once the claim has been filed and paid. Refunds will not be given until the damage investigation is complete. You must cooperate with the damage investigation process, including saving packaging materials, damaged goods, and taking any requested pictures of the damaged product for insurance purposes. Never throw damaged products or packaging materials away. If you choose not to cooperate with this process, we cannot offer a refund.
Refunds on items that are not customized will be given in full if you are not satisfied with your purchase. Refund must be requested within 7 days of receiving your item and shipped back in the same condition as purchased within 1 week.
Cancellations: If we have already spent time on your design proof and you request a cancellation of all or part of your order, we will need to charge a $20 design fee for each product cancelled. If you cancel any items purchased before painting or being shipped, we can issue a refund but will need to charge a re-stocking fee of $20.
RUSH ORDERS, SEATING CHARTS, MIRRORS: For time sensitive orders there may or may not be enough time to recreate and ship your mirror should it arrive damaged. We recommend ordering your mirror no later than one month prior so it arrives no later than two weeks in advance. If you don't approve your preview or give us the information we need to create your sign in time, we cannot be held responsible for the item arriving too late to replace. Should you approve your design with less than 2 weeks before your event date, a replacement will be out of the question if breakage occurs so a backup plan is always advised. We highly suggest ordering unbreakable acrylic product for rush orders to avoid the stress of possible breakage.
Should a mirror need to be replaced, we will offer to replace it with a comparable item. We do not stock large quantities of identical mirrors, so the chances of us replacing your mirror with the exact same piece are very slim.
We aim for beauty rather than perfection. Although we are highly detailed and use a critical eye, small imperfections are expected and embraced in the art of hand painting and lettering, as well as with vintage or antique pieces. Our pieces are not computer generated and we would never use vinyl stickers!

Shipping
If you request your package be sent to a different address than the one on your order, we cannot be responsible if it goes to the original address. We have no way of changing the address once the order is placed and with the amount of orders we process, there's no way for us to document order changes in the etsy system.
We cannot be held responsible for shipping delays that are out of our control such as weather delays, employment strikes or shipping company package loss. Please order your signs in time to account for possible delays.
Please keep in mind many of our products are very large and therefore calculated by dimensional weight. The shipping price calculated for your order is the actual cost of packaging and shipping- no hidden charges are added.
Shipping fees are for Continental US only. If you live in Alaska or Hawaii please contact us for a quote. Please do not order until you have informed us you are outside the continental US so we can accurately calculate your shipping cost.
Additional policies and FAQs
EXCESSIVE OR REDUCED TEXT- If you have an unusual amount of text, additional fees may apply. If you have just a title or small amount of text, discounts may apply. Convo for quote.
CHALKBOARD CALENDARS/CHORE CHARTS- To prevent staining we recommend using regular chalk or chalk cartridge pencils, found here. http://www.amazon.com/Dritz-Quilting-Chalk-Cartridge-Set/dp/B001UAJ7C6
Please do not clean your calendar or chore chart by rubbing harshly. To prevent fading, cleaning inside the lines with water or a dab of soap will keep your board looking new for many years. We cannot be responsible for staining issues if you use chalk "pens" or "bistro pens". They may or may not stain your board, depending on the brand you use.
COMMISSIONING OF LARGE PROJECTS
We love to do on-site painting at your location and travel expenses will apply. Convo to request commissioning of a large project.
