Frequently asked questions

Why can’t I open an SVG file with Silhouette Studio?

The basic (ie free) edition of Studio will NOT open SVG files, you would need to use a DXF format or learn to trace a JPEG file.

Designer Edition of Silhouette can open SVG files. The Designer Edition is a paid upgrade; although it isn’t necessary I highly recommend you make the investment… it will make life a lot easier.

Can I Cut SVG Files with my Cricut?

Yes Cricut Design Space software or Sure Cuts A Lot (SCAL) software will both work with the SVG format.

Why can’t I open the zip file?

You MUST have the correct software to unzip / open the file. I recommend doing a google search for how to unzip a zipped folder if unsure.

What is an SVG file?

An SVG stands for Scalable Vector Graphic. It can be used in many different software programs including Silhouette Studio, Cricut Design Space, Sure Cuts A Lot and Adobe Illustrator. The advantage of a vector file is that they are not made up of pixels and therefore the image can be resized without the edges becoming pixelated thus leaving a smooth cut line.
