Living on a prayer
So i went down to the potter's house, and there he was, making something at his wheel. But the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands, so he remade it into another pot, as it pleased the potter to make. (Jer. 18:3-4)
In 2011, Yang had graduated from MIT B.S. architecture , worked for a few months at the Small Design Firm, then at Microsoft Research, and ended up in Waltham Massachusetts with her husband David, taking care of a new baby daughter.
We lived in an apartment with 2 skylights, at one corner of the Moody and High St. intersection. Across the street from us was a busy restaurant, and in front of it at the busy sidewalk corner was a smallish medium sized tree. It was an ornamental city tree. But surprisingly it was a beacon for birds. It seemed birds all around flew to this birdtree, and when you walk underneath, you can hear from the sounds all above and around that it was a community center for birds.
In Oct/Nov 2012 as David worked on wrapping up his Biophysics Phd and we planned on moving us back to his family home of Chattanooga, Hurricane Sandy hit Boston. Our birdtree on Moody and High was damaged by the storm. The day before we left for Tennessee, the city came to the intersection and cut down the birdtree.
In 2013, on Signal Mtn Tennessee Yang started the Birdtree children's clothing line. She named it after the birdtree on Moody St.
Here in Tennessee we live with our three children on a farm belonging to David's grandmother. The beauty of the farmland inspires us daily.
In July 2015 praying for boldness and faith Yang left her day job at a local millwork company, and revitalized the Birdtree, adding CNC-ed snap-together furniture as a core Birdtree product.
The Birdtree is Yang following her calling to be an artist through work with design.
Thank you God for the gifts I am given. Enable me to fully use them to bless my family and glorify your Name. Let the Birdtree become the new, pleasing pot you form. ~yang's prayer
From Nov 2012 - July 2017 David and Yang lived out in the country in SE Tennesee, and Birdtree was artisanal CNCed Snap together wood furniture and heirloom children's clothes, made with care and love in Appalachia USA.
In July 2017 we moved to Houston Texas.
In July 2020 we returned back to the town of Signal Mountain Tennessee.
