I'm Holly, and my husband's name is Dan. We're the proud parents of an incredible little girl named Mirabelle, who has a rare genetic condition called Dup15q. She's nonverbal, experiences seizures daily, and requires 24/7 care. I am fortunate enough to be home with her every day, which is absolutely essential. She is the light of our lives, the source of so much of our joy, and a huge part of why Blue Barn Fiber means so much to us.
Long before Mirabelle was born, we dreamed of creating a business that would allow us to help animals, support environmentally responsible products, and give me a place to express my creativity. Blue Barn Fiber is the result of that dream, and we started our little business in 2013.
I studied Environmental Science in college, where I had the opportunity to learn quite a bit about the textile and agricultural industries. I was surprised by how environmentally damaging many common textiles can be, and I became fascinated by how wonderfully sustainable wool can be. That discovery opened up an entirely new world to us, and before long, we were completely hooked on all things fiber.
Our business has grown and changed quite a bit over the years. Today, I use my love of art to hand-dye yarn, and many of our colorways are created by me literally painting each skein with a paintbrush to create the colors and patterns you see in our shop.
I'm also extremely sensitive to scratchy wool, so softness is one of the very first things I look for when choosing the yarns we offer. If it's soft enough for me, it's soft enough for babies! I even used our yarn to make things for Mirabelle when she was a baby.
We're equally particular about where our wool comes from. We don't purchase wool from suppliers who practice mulesing, because we believe animal welfare should always be a priority. Shearing itself is a necessary and harmless part of caring for domesticated wool sheep, and we're proud to work with suppliers who share our commitment to treating animals responsibly.
Being as environmentally conscious as possible and making thoughtful choices about animal welfare have been part of the heart of Blue Barn Fiber from the very beginning.
