My spinning and weaving journey
I began my textile journey over 60 years ago as a history resource teacher at the Center of Science and Industry in Columbus, Ohio. Part of my job was to install working crafts along a "Street of Yesteryear". I learned how to spin wool at Williamsburg and work with flax (linen) at Sturbridge Village. I love history and came to appreciate the fibers and techniques of the early settlers living in the Midwest. Over the years, my love of coverlet patterns and natural fibers became a large part of my handwoven wall hangings, pillows and home decor.
I also enjoy dyeing my hand spun wool and this has recently evolved into producing "Art Yarn" for both knitting and weaving. I spin on both an antique flax spinning wheel from the early 1800's and a modern portable e-spinner.
In addition to my coverlet items, I have woven a number of liturgical pieces for churches in Michigan and Ohio. Commissioned works have included paraments, wall hangings, and altar cloths.
There is currently an upsurge to decorate with textiles in the home. They can bring coziness, a sense of Hygge, and a softness to a room while creating interest through color and texture.
The name of my shop is Blue Water Weaving because I create my textile pieces in a cottage overlooking Lake Michigan and a winter home along the Florida coast.
