Blumen Roots was started as a way to share high quality products with mother nature in mind. By offering small batch goods hand-dyed with low-impact materials, customers can rest assured that Blumen Roots makes thoughtful decisions throughout the dyeing process to reduce our impact on the environment.
Depending on the fabric (cellulose versus protein) and intended use, we create our goods with both natural plant material and low impact dyes that meet Oeko-Tex Standard 100 (an international certification process) as eco-friendly.
Giving back is also a key part of our mission, so Blumen Roots is committed to donating a portion of its sales to meaningful causes. Throughout 2022, Blumen Roots will make a monthly donation to Honor the Earth, whose mission is to create awareness and support for Native environmental issues and to develop needed financial and political resources for the survival of sustainable Native communities. Blumen Roots acknowledges, with gratitude and respect, the Salish and Pend’ Oreilles peoples, whose ancestors, past and present have called Kehi-oo-le, or Rattlesnake Valley, their home. We honor their commitment and care for this land and seek to instill these values in our lives and business practices.
Here are some of the ways our decisions support a more sustainable textile industry:
> Ethically foraged plants and locally grown flowers serve as the bulk of Blumen Roots materials.
> All plant materials are composted at the end of the dyeing process, making their way back into the soil to enrich our flower beds and gardens.
> We use 100% recycled padded mailers, wrapping paper, and boxes, which are all are reusable, compostable and/or biodegradable after they get to you.
> Natural tannins are used whenever possible including rhubarb, avocado, and black walnut hulls.
> All dye baths are used until clear and remaining water is poured back into flower beds and mordant baths are reused at least four times to reduce waste and water. When finished, mordant baths are disposed of properly.
> Well-calculated dye baths and a resourceful rinsing station reduces the amount of water used to remove extra dye.
> Environmentally friendly scouring detergents and ph neutral soaps are used for scouring and after-wash, which helps keep harmful chemicals out of our water systems.
> Energy efficient front load washing machine aids the scouring and post-bath process, while saving energy and water.
