I got tired of my "day job" and that changed everything!
Collecting, fixing, refurbishing, and using sewing machines has been a life-long interest and passion of mine. About 15 years ago I began servicing and repairing machines for friends. It didn’t take long to realize this enjoyable hobby could become a fun business. Eventually, after a long career in property management I decided it was time for a change.
My new passion is working on heirloom-quality vintage machines of many brands, particularly those from the golden age of sewing when machines were beautifully designed to the highest standards. Most old machines are works of functional art; they employ the finest degree of mechanical engineering, are manufactured with the best materials and to the highest specifications, plus they truly are a joy to both use and work on. I’m proud to say I’m one of the few technicians in my area with the desire, skills, knowledge and tools, to properly adjust and repair these fine older machines. There is nothing more satisfying to me than bringing one of these beauties back to life for an appreciative owner.
Along the way I also refined my sewing skills and discovered how much I enjoy sharing my knowledge with others. I really enjoy teaching a variety of sewing-related classes including fine shirt-making.
I love anything mechanical and I discovered antique sock machines. That began a new interest in sock knitting, spinning and dyeing wool. I plan to spend more of my time "making stuff" and I hope to offer it for sale to you.
Although I've retired from my job at the University of Minnesota, I'm busier than ever these days! Bobbin House Studio was featured in "Threads" magazine as a Twin Cities sewing-lover's destination and as a result I've met many new customers and interesting friends. I also travel to teach and lecture on various fiber arts topics.
Bobbin House Studio is also a short-term lodging, guest suite fitted for one or two guests and this is our Studio's gift shop.
You'll find we do various things in our studio. We knit socks, weave, sew, quilt, make metal clay jewelry and sewing notions. We also sometimes discover interesting vintage sewing notions and tools that we think are worth using and preserving. We also offer those for sale.
If you can't visit us in person, this Etsy shop is the next best thing!
