My jewelry is made with quality base metals. Base metals of any kind are not water proof. To keep your item shined, I recommend a jewelry polishing cloth. Also.. storing your handmade item in a ziplock sandwich bag when not in use will preserve luster. My more rustic pieces thrive well on their own and the look is preferred.
