Cozy hats!
Welcome to My Head Cozy! My hats are built for warmth and comfort and are always carefully handmade. Look around and find the perfect hat for you! May your ears never go numb.
Hi there, my name is Emily Buckner. I am many things-- a daughter, sister, friend, book-lover, history major, runner, and entrepreneur. I am also not built for the cold. While falling snow is magical to watch, I'll watch from inside curled up next to a fire in 3 sweaters with a cup of tea, thank you very much. Being from the Midwest, one can't hide forever and must go out in the cold eventually. And that is where the idea for My Head Cozy originated! I just wanted a warm hat.
FAQ: Wow! How long have you been knitting?
Short answer: I have been crocheting for 11 years.
More fun back story: Once upon a time I read a story about a chef who started cooking when he was 4 years old. And at the time my little 10 year old self said, "oh man, I'm already 10! I need something cool that I can do & be able to say 'I've been doing this since I was 10'. It won't be as impressive as 4, but it'll have to do". I thought I was really behind. So on the next trip to the library instead of checking out another Tin-Tin comic or Boxcar Children book, I went to the DIY section and checked out about 12 different books-knitting, crocheting, quilting, bead work, card making, tatting, cooking, plumbing (plumbing?), woodwork, carpentry--you name it. At the end of the day crocheting (it's similar to knitting) stuck--I learned from a book! Good decision 10 year old self.
FAQ: Cool, so what's the story of your shop exactly?
Short answer: I wanted to study abroad so I started making hats.
Fun back story: Fast forward to college. It was the summer before my sophomore year. It was my dream to study abroad in Rome the following spring. I was working 2 jobs, but knew I was going to have to get creative if I was going to make it work. I was familiar with Etsy, and so I brainstormed and ended up designing a crocheted head wrap thing to keep my ears warm. That was as far as I got. In October I was hanging out with my friend named Rachel, who also happened to be a business major. I told her the rough sketch of my plan. We sat and brainstormed names, and 'My Head Cozy' was born! Now that I had the perfect name my plan solidified. I ordered my supplies using the money I had earned that summer. Huge boxes of yarn came in the mail and I got to work! A friend asked if I could make owl hats. I whipped up a design and that design sparked ideas for other designs, and all of these things ended up in my shop too. I crocheted constantly! My friend Paulina agreed to take pictures for me and other friends jumped in and agreed to be models. The fireplace you see in the men's Santa hat pic--that's in the school cafeteria! The pictures came out beautifully and I officially launched My Head Cozy. The rest is, as they say, history. I never could have it done it without all of the help from my friends. My friend Emily (yes, another Emily) even started to help me with the sewing part. Anyway, I sold those hats and went to Rome. In Rome that Spring everyone in my class who had bought a head cozy was sure glad to have it--it gets cold there!
FAQ: That's pretty swell. What are you doing now?
I really liked running the shop, so once I returned from Rome I decided to continue. And here we are! I run the shop and go to college. Good thing I can read history books and crochet at the same time!
