South Asheville Shop Safe after Storm
Many of you inquired so here is my storm story: I create, package and mail these whimsical wings from South Asheville, NC, USA
The rain then hurricane Helene caused me to be without power or water for about one week. We are up on high ground so were spared the devastation that happened below. The flood caused us to be trapped on our mountain for a few days. We escaped with just some downed branches. We are physically ok. The devastation to our area is truly heart breaking. It will take this community a long time to heal emotionally and mentally.
As for this shop it was Sept 27, so prime costume time. What relief it was for me to have this business to focus on instead of details of the tragedy around me. I was fortunate to access orders at a nearby shop with power and wifi. My husband and I packed up our car with the orders, my laptop and label printer and mailed the orders from a hotel room in nearby Charlotte. The roads were heavily littered with trees, downed wires, and mudslides, but we were able to leave. It was my husband's birthday on Sept 30 and he got his wish for a hot shower.
It was odd to be just two hour drive away with very little damage. I honestly felt guilty enjoying a carefree meal while others were in the dark without water and some their home. I have learned that guilt is grief. I grieve for our beloved Blue Ridge area.
I've helped with some food distribution and spent a day volunteering at a supply distribution site. I've also participated in vigils in both Asheville and in Black Mountain. This area has experienced loss, but it may have brought us together.
Together we'll rebuild.
I am so happy to still have this job when so many here have livelihoods that we swept down the river.
We are slowly hosting events again in safe areas of town. I joined my first post- storm event two days ago. It seems we all need joy during these crazy times. Joy is necessary to sit alongside our grief whether that grief is huge or small.
