About

I have two hobbies and in 2014 I made them both my profession by becoming my own boss.

I have been doing graphic design for almost 10 years now. I used to do mostly full 3d modelling for quite a few years of those. It was something I continued to do while chasing my dream of becoming a pilot. Design was a crazy big hobby of mine and something I could carry with me wherever I travelled.

One thing besides flying I always wanted to do was teach. So after finishing my education I went and became a flight instructor for a few years before I would start looking at bigger companies to fly for. While being a flight instructor I got my first baby. Only 1,5 years later twins arrived as well.

My partner in crime and dad to my babies is Wouter. He started a company a few years ago doing digital design, webdesign etc. as well. He also happens to be a pilot. When I was pregnant I helped him out starting his Etsy shop besides his more graphics-only orientated marketplaces, and he actually enjoyed it! He was also able to use a lot of my drawn designs for digitizing, while I did some social media for him and helped him out during my maternity leave. That store grew over his head. Being a fulltime pilot he never realised there was such a market for graphics on Etsy.

When the twins were born, the company I used to work for, and had a chance to return to, went out of business. The only other jobs available are mostly without a contract or way overseas. Don't get me wrong I love to travel, but moving a family of 5 to the other side of the world didn't sound very attractive to me. Besides that, Wouter still has quite a nice job as a pilot which we shouldn't give up. So I got a little stuck. My flying licenses need updating, but for what cause? I would have done that with my previous company to work there as a freelancer again maybe, but that company is gone (a company I have known for 10 years now and deeply loved).

I was facing unemployment and didn't like that one bit. I love being a mother, but I love working as well!

I decided to start my own business, or actually multiple businesses it turned out. This way I could be hired as a pilot or for other aviation related activities.

The other business idea came up when Wouter decided his Etsy shop was getting too busy (I know, first world problem right). I could continue that on my own! But since it was his company and I wanted to start making my own money and use my own name I had to go a new route. I spent the first few months after the babies were born making a business plan and eventually took the plunge and registered my name.

That is how 'By Lef' was born.

The business plan involved a lot more than creating clipart and digital papers and other designer resources, but those new things are planned for the new year. So stay tuned if you are curious.

I appreciate every single one of my customers more than I could put down in words probably. I love to engage with you all on social media, so if you like that you can find the links to those pages in my shop.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read my story.

Love,

Manon

Frequently asked questions
You accept returns/cancellations unless it's a digital product. But you only sell digital products. How does this work?

According to EU rules you have 14 days to return a physical purchase, but for digital items different rules apply since they can not be returned. This means once you start the download process, you may no longer withdraw from the purchase. The reason for this is that digital items can not be returned to the seller. If you haven't started the download process you are still eligible to return/cancel your purchase.

note: if you start the download and cancel it, you can't withdraw from your purchase anymore since there is no way to see if the files arrived or not.

How will I know if your product had an update?

If I upgrade or update a product I will send you a message on the email address you provided during checkout. The email will contain the upgraded product or instructions on how to download them free of charge.

What programs do I need to use your items?

Please make sure to check software compatibility. All filetypes are mentioned in the item descriptions. Most digital papers and clipart are JPEG or PNG files that are delivered by Etsy in a ZIP file. Make sure you know if you have programs supporting these filetypes before your purchase. All of these files can be opened with software freely available on the internet. Ofcourse you also need the knowledge on how to do so, but if you think I can help you understand the missing piece I am more than willing to answer any questions if you send me a message.

There are also items with additional filetypes like vector files and Adobe Photoshop utilities. Professional (mostly paid) programs and knowledge are usually required to use these.

Can I print your graphics and digital papers?

All items are high resolution and in theory could be printed.
In practice however it's really required to have some knowledge on printing digital files.

If you are printing at home, colors can vary greatly depending on printer settings. Make sure your printer has up-to-date software, is calibrated, and you have done some color testing to make sure your end result is as good as can be. For professional looking prints you really do need a professional printer, or take your files to a professional printing company.

Does my purchase come with a license?

Upon purchasing a file you have a personal and small commercial non transferrable single user license. You can keep private copies on all your personal computers, but you can not share the purchased items with anyone else unless when used in a design for small business purposes if the item is non-extractable from the end-product. I will define some more below.

What commercial use is allowed with my purchase?

The regular small business limitation I have set is a maximum of 500 products for sale. (All purchases before September 2017 are now upgraded and you can use your product up to 500 sales)

• You can use the purchased product for 1 project commercially. If you wish to use it for multiple projects you will need a license for each.
• My item must be used as part of your own complete design and not stand-alone or extractable.
• you can never resell or give away the files as is for digital projects. You have to use it as part of your design, and the final product must be flattened so the end user can not extract it.
• you may not use the files for creating other digital clipart or digital patterns and scrapbooking kits for sale or for free.

Can you give me examples of allowed usage?

• print them and use them in your personal and small business crafting products.
• Use them in flattened files that you offer for sale as printed or digital wall-art (as an element in your own design)
• Use them for making personal and small business cards and invitations
• use them for creating your logo, etsy banner, and other things you don't charge for
• use them in a single end product for your customer where the original file is not extractable

If you still have doubts or don't see your purpose listed here, please contact me! I wish I could have unlimited usage policies but that would put me out of business. I am however always happy to see if we can negotiate usage for your personal idea or commercial (ad-)venture.

Custom and personalized orders

I love to do custom work! Sadly I currently don't have time to do custom work since my schedule is full and we're planning a move. If you don't need something in a big hurry, feel free to contact me to find out if I have any options available in the future.
