I've faced the dessert challenge for many parties, including a kids birthday party, a holiday party, a baby shower, a bridal shower, a retirement party, a family reunion, and on and on. One challenge is coming up with the amazing cake that will be tasty,be fun and creative, not require days or weeks of advance planning, involve the family or friends, and not cost a bundle.
THE PROBLEM WITH BAKERIES
One easy solution is the local supermarket bakery cake. However, the supermarket bakery cake can be very boring. Who wants a simple sheet cake with white icing for an exciting party? You see those cakes at so many birthday parties. Half the time I go to the supermarket, they don't have the flavor I like or the colors aren't right. Also, their favorite cake flavor is never available when I need it. The local bakery offers a more custom touch. However, it is more expensive and I must order the cake several days earlier.
AVOIDING THE WILTON TRAP
I've watched my sister-in-law stroll the craft stores and Walmart shopping for the shaped cake pans. There are often very limited options in the store, compared to the catalog. I personally wonder what I'd do with that pan after the party. I don't think I'd create that cake again. I certainly don't even have the space to store all those cake pans. I've never been successful at selling on eBay. You really can't get much for items in a garage sale. Also, the pan is just the first cost of that cake. There are hundreds of other products in that aisle. I found myself counting all the other supplies and tools that I would need to create the cake pictured. I then realized that I would likely need to take the cake decorating class in order to make the cake as pictured.
BREAK THE BANK FOR THE MASTERPIECES
I enjoy watching the cake decorating shows on television. Amazing cakes are decorated by Duff, the Cake Boss, or on Cake Challenge. I've seen the Cake Boss try to explain to Rachel Ray how to create a neat cake – however, that was very awkward to watch. Do you know how expensive their cakes are? They often cost hundreds to thousands of dollars. Those wonderful, masterpieces are truly unaffordable for the average family.
THE CHALLENGE OF THE INTERNET CAKE
I enjoy creating fun, unique cakes for my family and friends – a cake that will put smiles on their faces, one that will make the party memorable, and one that each will know has been especially created for them. For years I've seen the neat, shaped cakes on the Internet. There are thousands of cool, cake pictures. However, you only see pictures of the cakes with brief descriptions about the cake. Even the sites that try to describe how to make the cake often only show a diagram or photograph. Those are not always clear or accurate, resulting in trial-and-error. Who has time to experiment?
A LIBRARY OF CAKE DECORATING BOOKS
I've purchased many books that show amazing cakes, but again there are only diagrams and descriptions. Most of the amazing cakes require special cake decorating tools, such as icing bags and icing tips. Also, most require things like fondant and sculpting tools. Those bakers studied and practiced for years to create those cakes. (Do kids even like fondant? My nephews really like buttercream icing or vanilla icing.)

SIMPLE DECORATING SOLUTIONS FROM YOUR SUPERMARKET
I'm not a professional cake decorator. You may likely be able to create a much prettier cake, especially if you've already bought and learned how to use some of the cake decorating tools. However, every CakeShapes Designs cake pictured on the website is decorated by me (an amateur) without using any cake decorating tools – no piping bags, no icing tips, no fondant, no modeling chocolate, etc. I use everyday items from the supermarket to decorate the cake. My grocery store generally has several shelves of cake decorating suppliers, such as colored sugars, sprinkles, icing gels, and food coloring. A stroll down the cookie and candy aisle also offers a lot of other cake decorating options. I've really only invested in a good angled spatula and icing colors.
