Chess puzzle books made for one player's rating, with their name on the cover. I'm a club player who wanted personal puzzles without the screen time, so I built this for myself first.

Custom chess puzzle books, built around your rating

I'm Stephan, a club player from the Netherlands who learned chess as an adult. Like most busy adults, I want to keep getting better and enjoy the game, but I wanted less screen time.

That turned out to be a choice between two bad options. Puzzle apps pick puzzles for your level, but keep you on your phone. Puzzle books get you off the screen, but they're written for nobody in particular: half the puzzles are too easy, the rest too hard to start.

So I built one for myself. My software reads a player's public games on Lichess or Chess.com, works out their level, and picks 144 puzzles from the open Lichess puzzle database to fit it: four themed chapters, a mixed challenge at the end, every answer in the back, and their name on the cover. A pencil, a coffee, and no notifications.

Now I make the same book for you, or for the chess player you're buying for. Each one is made for your order. Printed copies are printed and posted by my partner Lulu; PDFs arrive on your Etsy order.

Frequently asked questions

Does the player need to do anything?

No. I only use their public profile and games, so it can be a complete surprise.

What if I get the username wrong?

If I can't make a book from it, I'll message you before anything is printed or sent. Please double-check the spelling: I make the book for exactly the username you give.

How hard are the puzzles?

Each themed chapter starts a little below the player's rating and climbs above it. The mixed challenge at the end goes higher still.

Where do the puzzles come from?

From the open Lichess puzzle database (CC0), filtered to puzzles thousands of players have solved and rated well. My own software picks them for each player.

When will it arrive?

Printed books: about 3 weeks, shipping included. PDFs: within 2 working days, on your Etsy order.

Can I return it?

Every book is custom-made, so not for a change of mind. Damaged, misprinted or lost? Message me within 30 days and I'll reprint it or refund you.

Is the PDF an instant download?

No: I make it for your player after you order, then add it to your order.
