A Mid-Century Artist in the 21st Century
I am the daughter of an architectural designer who designed public buildings in the middle of the last century. My father imparted to me a sense of light, color, space, line and form.
I combine these elements with my love for the natural world, as well as the built world, creating botanical and geometrical shapes in my work.
Though I trained as a fine artist and graphic designer, it was always metals that fascinated me. I knew I would get to them someday. When that day arrived more than a decade ago, I grabbed on and have never let go.
My work is wearable and I want to adorn the body. But I am mostly interested in what I can make metals do and what I can express with them. I feel strong Mid-Century aesthetics in my work without resorting to cliche.
Mid-Century design was about clean lines and airiness. I feel my Muse speaks that language and often sits upon my shoulder whispering in my ear. Mid-Century aesthetics were also about adventure and exploration. And this is what my metalsmithing career has been for me.
I hope you can see that in my work, as well as the language of the graphic designer I once was. And the writerly person I am today. It all fits together somewhere in my soul, and I hope that my work brings some of the fun and airiness to your life, too!
