My Unconventional Journey To Art Success
My journey into art is one I would call unconventional and one I hope by sharing, will inspire those who believe they lack an artistic background to embrace their creative passions and move forward on their own unconventional, later-in-life journey.
My educational background and professional experience lie in finance and accounting. I never had any formal training in art, not even a class in High School. It’s true growing up, I was surrounded by creativity thanks to my very talented Mother and brother with music and theater but not in art per se. It wasn't until my mid 40s that I felt a sudden interest in art. I was active with my husband’s marketing business but on the financial side. Due to financial changes in the marketplace, I started doing more of the creative functions and found I was pretty good and that working digitally in photoshop and illustrator came naturally to me. Then a few years later a convergence of life events I like to call my "perfect storm" with my kids leaving for college, changes in family businesses, and the loss of my parents, I found myself in need of an outlet, an escape to help me through that didn’t involve pouring that next glass of wine.
Why I picked up a paint brush I guess has to do with my digital experience, I really don’t know, but as I held that brush I discovered a newfound passion that consumed me. I painted relentlessly to the point where my paints and everything else spilled onto my clothes and all over our home. It was kinda crazy. As word spread and connections were made, I was approached to sell a few pieces. To my surprise, my first artwork sold for over $2,500 to a collector through a designer friend. When that same collector purchased five more pieces that summer, I realized my art was pretty good and this was more than just therapy—it was an opportunity to pursue art professionally. And so, SallieOArt was born.
Today, I am a full-time artist, dedicated to doing what I love with unwavering commitment. I have no intentions of ever stopping. Recently, I had the privilege of participating in a virtual art expo in Italy and Spain, expanding my reach beyond borders. I am also venturing into home goods and prints, while exploring new avenues such as NFTs and digital products.
My journey is a testament to the power of following one's passion, regardless of where you come from, ignoring that harsh inner voice that tells you you’re not good enough, and knowing a degree in art is not the only avenue to a successful career in creativity. And, I’m proof that it's never too late to discover and pursue your passion. So, to anyone who feels the call of something outside the box, go for it - I encourage you to try, embrace the unknown, and embark on your own artistic adventure. You never know where it may lead you.
