So the shirt was great but the packaging to my house all ripped open like someone took out the shirt and shoved it back in there... It was a little unnerving that some one did that. Maybe for the future a different way of shipping, but all in all it got to my house fine in a timely manor and I can't wait for my little guy to show it off.

Daily Herald Article on Cover It In Vinyl

SARATOGA SPRINGS -- MaKell and Christian Steven's start-up began as an unplanned result of their wedding. “It just kind of happened I guess,” MaKell Stevens’ said. “When we first started it, I thought it would be $50 here and there. So yes, it was surprising.”

The two Saratoga Springs business owners have locals covered for their décor needs at coveritinvinyl.com. Initially called Down the Aisle Vinyl, the couple's first product was for their own wedding aisle -- creating sticker quotes and additional vinyl featuring the bride and groom's names and wedding date.

“When I got home from my honeymoon we decided to try selling ceremony aisle vinyl and posted on etsy.com,” MaKell Stevens said. Initially, they developed vinyl stickers for shoe soles that said “I do” and “Me too” for the wedding market. Other items included names on wedding glasses and goblets.

“I met my wife and I was kind of an entrepreneur and she was, too," Christian Stevens said. "She just didn’t know it."

The realization that their idea was business worthy came when Cosmopolitan magazine freelancer Megan Victoria contacted them through their Etsy site.

“She contacted me and said she wanted to feature this one design she liked,” MaKell Stevens said. Their “put me down” vinyl for the toilet seat was featured in the January 2014 issue, and since its publication the entrepreneurs have seen a spike in orders.

“It’s fun. You get motivated and learn not everybody needs to do Shark Tank, I guess,” Christian Stevens said. Each order, depending on how big it is, usually takes just 5-10 minutes to fill. If it’s vinyl for a wall sign, mailbox, floor or toilet seat, the Stevens' can make the order in their home and have the creation on its way within a day.

“[We’re] very busy,” MaKell Stevens said. “When I get home from work, we sit down and do whatever we have.” “We have no life other than this business, pretty much,” she added with a giggle. “But I wouldn’t have it any other way.” Her love in life is her husband, who has a passion for entrepreneurship and a few businesses on the burner.

“What I’m really trying to do is really motivate other people to start. It’s possible to make a third income from your house." When they started their vinyl business, family and friends doubted the newlyweds could make it work. Contrary to mythology, Christian Stevens said his mother-in-law was very supportive.

He said he didn’t think this particular business would be the one to explode, but it has. Not a manly-man’s idea for a business, he said it has become a site for women, for the homemaker. “It’s not the men’s style, definitely, but my wife loves it,” he said. “The kids love it. They like the dinosaur and stuff. "Our best seller is “put me down” for the toilet. ... Next is the nail decals.”
