Hi, I'm Kate Shephard — an abstract artist working from my studio on the Dorset coast, where I create vibrant, expressive oil paintings that blend colour, movement and calm.
My story begins in Warsaw, Poland, where I grew up during communist-era Poland. The world around me often felt grey and heavy — but my summers were something else entirely. Spent at my grandfather's house in the countryside, roaming freely through meadows, wading in streams and cycling along dirt tracks under warm golden light. Those childhood summers taught me something I've never forgotten — that beauty, colour and nature are not luxuries. They are nourishment for the soul.
When my family moved to England I carried those memories with me. Life wasn't always easy, but through it all I held onto the things that made me feel alive — light, colour, open horizons, and the quiet anchor of my Christian faith. It is my faith that grounds me, inspires me and reminds me that even in the darkest seasons there is always light waiting to break through.
For years I worked as a corporate computer programmer — practical, stable, but not mine. When I finally picked up a paintbrush everything shifted. Painting became my sanctuary. My way of breathing. My way of making sense of the world.
Now I live in Dorset with my husband and two teenagers, painting from my coastal studio, endlessly inspired by the sea outside my window. I now paint abstractly because I'm not trying to replicate what I see — I'm trying to capture how it feels. Colour as emotional language. Beauty as restoration. Art as a reminder that even in the grey seasons, there is always colour waiting to break through. 🤍
