5 out of 5 starsMy item arrived and it was so well packed. The quality and craftsmanship is amazing. I will definitely recommend this company to my friends. My one nitpick would be that I thought this shelf was hung using a French cleat, which would make it much easier to hang, but it isn't.

In the past, we used French cleats for our installations, but we found they created challenges for clients when walls weren’t perfectly flat. The French cleat also didn’t provide the level of secure support we want for our pieces, especially heavier pieces. Our current mounting method is designed to give you a more secure installation. 5 out of 5 starsDon and Heather crushed this. We ordered this mantle with some very specific customizations. It was perfect. They were easy to work with and responsive. Execution was incredible. My contractor installed it in a spot that had specific size requirements due to paneling surrounding it. He said it slid into the spot with a satisfying "shunk" noise. It's exactly what we needed for our new home.

Hidden Storage Mantels: Is there a magnet or some other mechanism that keeps the door closed when not in use?
The hinges we use are high quality soft close and hold the mantels closed very well, but we can add a magnet if you request one. This might be especially good if you have littles running around. :)
How far above the fireplace should my mantel be mounted?
Each insert is different. Check the manufacturer recommendations for your particular firebox insert. You may also check local city codes for guidance. That being said, the deeper the mantle the higher it should be mounted. We have had some clients add a heat shield to their insert or under the mantel after install if they worry its getting to warm.
Hidden Storage Mantels: What size is the optional cord grommet and is the placement customizable?
The grommet is 2" wide. Our standard is to put them in the center toward the back of the mantel, but placement is completely customizable. Also, the dividers on the inside are placed so that cords can move freely between compartments throughout the whole inside of the mantel.
Since this will be above my fireplace, is the varnish or sealant you use flammable?
Wood is flammable in and of itself! However, the finish we use is a conversion varnish, not an oil based or regular lacquer. This gives a much more durable finish that holds up very well over time. Please see question regarding mantle placement for more information about how high your mantle should be mounted above your fireplace.
Hidden Storage Mantels: How do I know what size I need to fit my media components?
First, measure your components. Don't forget to include the pesky power cords when measuring the depth- they can stick out quite far! Next add AT LEAST one inch to your height and depth measurements to see what size mantel you need. (For example, a 9 inch deep gaming console would need at minimum a 10 inch mantel). Some clients have chosen to add more space after checking manufacturer instructions and noting their component is recommended to have more space for good airflow. A quick note: Anything over 7 inches high will have custom pricing because we have to source an especially wide piece of wood for you.
