Be careful when you are shopping for Proof Sets to make sure you know exactly what you are purchasing. Look at the store's descriptions and pictures to determine exactly what you are purchasing and if the Proof Set is also being sold with its box and Certificate of Authenticity (COA). If a Proof Set issued before 1983 does not come with its box it should be discounted significantly. If a Proof Set issued from 1983 to present does not come with its box and/or COA it should be discounted significantly.

Commencing in 1968 until the present date Proof Sets come in boxes from the U.S. Mint and commencing in 1983 Proof Sets were issued with a Certificate of Authenticity (COA).

Regular U.S. Proof Sets issued commencing in 1968 no longer contain any silver coins. There are special silver proof sets issued - eg. silver proof sets, Prestige Proof Sets, etc.

Color of envelope/box proof sets come in:
1955 to 1964 - White/Tan envelope
1965 to 1967 - No proof sets issued
1968 to 1972 - Blue box
1973 to 1979 - Black box
1980 to 1982 - Black - Smaller - Display box
1983 - Blue box
1984 to 1993- Purple box
1994 to 1998 - Green box
1998 to 2015 -
2016 to Present - Illustrated modern box

I go out of my way to make sure that I describe in detail exactly what you are purchasing. When you are purchasing something from my store I specifically state what you are receiving. Almost all of my Proof Sets come in their box with a COA commencing in 1983 which I consider the gold standard. Some Proof Sets in my store will not come with a box or COA even if they had been issued with them and I will specifically state so and discount the price substantially because of that.
