About

Rustic. Russian. Reusable

It all started with Christmas. I wanted to hand make gifts that were meaningful and practical that I could share with my nearest and dearest. I didn't want my gift to end up in the trash or giveaway pile in a matter of months. So how did I get from this point to deciding to make kitchen towels for everyone?

Early in 2014, I started going through the process of analyzing everyday activities where we could save money with a little time investment. Without realizing it, I was crossing the threshold of going crunchy with parts of my life. However, if I was going to go crunchy, it had to be practical and budget friendly. Soon I found ways to save money by baking our own bread, using everyday items (baking soda, vinegar and salt) to clean the house and making our own laundry detergent. And yes, I did successfully cross the threshold of no chemical shampoo...but that is another story. All of these changes not only saved me money but worked or tasted better than the commercial bought equivalents.

One of my greatest revelations was how great kitchen towels were....they clean so much better than a sponge or paper towel! And they last longer and are more durable. And they are reusable!! Practical and budget friendly! Soon I found myself using kitchen towels to clean everywhere while tidying up my daughter's many spills and messes around the house. What a simple solution and yet for years I've been using sponges that seem to have shorter life expectancy with each purchase and paper towels which are handy but require a bit more elbow grease to clean the oven. Oh the simple things in life! Kitchen towels were the source of great joy for me this year. I know how that sounds but truly, they were a God send especially with a child in the house. So from this experience I decided everyone was going to get a tea towel from me for Christmas.

Like with everything in my life, I love a little art and beauty even in practical items. That is how I knew I wanted to print images on towels. With quite a bit of research, I learned to screen print on a budget. Design wise, I knew I wanted to tip my hat to my Russian heritage with a rustic twist (I love to garden and grow our own food - which is very Russian too). In the summer, Russians spend a considerable amount of time at a second home or cottage outside the city called a dacha. They spend time relaxing and growing amazing garden crops. A dacha is Rustic, Russian and Reusable and became my inspiration. So Dacha Designs was born.

In the future, I hope to introduce additional items that are Rustic, Russian and Reusable while also being budget savvy, practical, artsy and transformative (a tea towel doesn't only clean - a kitchen towel can be framed as art, hung as a curtain for a small window, or swaddled around a doll for playtime). I hope you find as much joy in my hand designed home wares as I do and can enjoy the simple things life has to offer.
