I think of myself as the artist who wasn't supposed to be. After all, I couldn't draw, have horrible handwriting, and always received bland smiles from art teachers in school. And yet here I am, many years after purchasing Photoshop as a whim in 1997* when I was a teenager, still learning and creating and loving it.
At first, it was just a way to edit photos and create simple graphics for my first website, which was an embarrassing account of my life at 17. Over the years, however, I developed more skills and knowledge, which proved useful when a part-time job lost their graphic designer shortly before a large print project was due. I took over the project as well as the position, where I designed my first print ads and designed a yearly travel guide for a small tourist town. It took a lot of research and investment of my personal time to be successful at it, but it never felt like work.
Even as I've pursued other career paths, like graduate work in English literature, the thing I always come back to is design.
