Announcement    Welcome! Selling on Etsy since 2011. **Free Shipping** on orders $35.00 and over! US Addresses only.
Designs in Wool offers beautiful wool fabric, both hand dyed and mill dyed, for rug hooking, applique, quilting, sewing and crafting and my own line of primitive rug hooking patterns. In 2020, I also introduced some of my designs in punch needle patterns in digital format, see the Punch Needle PDF Patterns Section.

All wool fabrics are all 100% wool fabrics from top US distributors. Hand dyed and mill dyed, each piece comes to you washed and dried with care to make if perfectly ready for crafting with wool.

I have been dyeing wool and designing patterns for primitive rug hooking since 1998. My pattern designs are greatly influenced by my love for folk art and simple geometric lines. Many of the designs are inspired by antique rugs and stories of the early days of rug hooking. A bit of whimsy with a lack of perspective fits right in with my fondness for "doodling" which I've been enjoying since I was a young girl.

The recent punch needle patterns are based on my original designs. Punching up these delightful little punch needles has been so fun. And more to come! These patterns are Digital download patterns. Pdf pages will be e-mailed to you after purchase, which you can then download and print.

I'm glad you are here. Peruse the wool fabrics and primitive patterns, many of which are suitable for beginners. If you have never hooked before, I recommend that you sign up for a class or workshop in your area, purchase a book on primitive rug hooking or search for YouTube videos to see how it's done.

My kits come with the wool and pattern, but do not include the other items that you will need for rug hooking such as a hook, a frame or hoop, edge finishing yarn or tape.

Feel free to contact me with any questions you might have.

International customers are welcome to contact me for a shipping quote, click on the "request custom order" on a listing you are interested in, let me know which listings you are interested in with choices if options are available and I will get back to you with a shipping charge quote.

Thank you for visiting Designs In Wool! Enjoy your visit! Mary

Frequently asked questions

Custom and personalized orders

Please feel free to contact me about special orders by clicking on the "request a custom order" button. I have a lot of inventory that is not listed.

If you are looking for a specific color or texture, I will be happy to check my inventory. If you are able to send a photo, that is a great help to me in understanding what you are looking for.

Special Orders are non returnable. Wool Kits and Wool Packs that have been cut in strips for rug hooking are not refundable.

Designs and patterns that have been customized and/or personalized cannot be returned.

Which Backing Fabric should I choose?

Cotton Monks Cloth is 100% cotton woven with two warp threads and two weft threads has 12 x 13 holes per inch. It is great for hooking with all cuts of wool, from fine to primitive cuts. It is less expensive than primitive linen.

Primitive linen is 100% linen, the most durable backing fabric. It is more expensive than other backing fabrics. The evenly spaced weave of 12 x 12 threads per inch makes it great for all primitive cuts, #7 and wider.
Beginners usually have an easier time hooking with linen.

Both are fine and long lasting choices for the backing to support and make your hooked rug durable. I use both types, but usually choose linen for larger projects.

Do you refund shipping overage charges?

Yes, if the difference is $3.00 or more. Etsy calculations, especially on orders with multiple items, can add up to more than the actual shipping. I will let you know when your order is ready to ship if you will be receiving a shipping refund.
