Everything I make here at Down to the Wire Designs is handcrafted with time-honored methods and eco-friendly materials. My jewelry is created using ethically sourced materials. I purchase recycled and ethically mined metals from reputable US-based suppliers. I offer only conflict-free diamonds, responsibly sourced gemstones (like fair trade sapphires), and lab-grown stones. Finally, my studio is a low impact, environmentally friendly space. Chemicals are kept to a minimum and natural options are always preferred. Please contact me if you would like more information on the materials I use or if you’d like some help choosing what options are right for you.

Please note, I also have a "satellite" shop, called Fire and Skill (which you can find here: www.etsy.com/shop/fireandskill ). It's a place to find one of a kind, discontinued, and altogether special inventory pieces previously found in this Down to the Wire Designs shop. Because the pieces over there are inventory items, I generally sell them at an approximately 20% discount below the bespoke pieces found here in my Down to the Wire Designs shop.

I have been working as a metalsmith for nearly twenty years and continue to find wonder in metal. The designs shown here are a mix of limited edition pieces and pieces from my production line.

International buyers: You may see the phrase “VAT included (where applicable)” under the purchase price. Please note that VAT is *not* included in your purchase price. Despite this confusing language, I am a U.S. seller and am unable to collect VAT. If VAT is due, it will be calculated and collected for your shipment when it enters your country.

A custom version of my Falling Leaves domed band in 14k rose gold -- it could be the perfect reminder of your autumn wedding.
A high shine on the inside, the texture of raw silk on the outside. I'm working on a few simple bands that can easily be paired with my new engagement rings; you should see them popping up in my shop soon :)
I love the color of this Sky Blue Topaz against the yellow gold. Planning on starting a princess-cut Moissanite variation soon!

About

I love what I do!

I have been making and selling jewelry for nearly twenty years now. I stumbled into jewelry while attending the University of Washington, which at the time had an excellent metal arts program (sadly, no more!) I was taking art classes to fill holes in my class schedule, and the only thing that would fit was an Intro to Jewelry class. I was skeptical about taking the class because I had no knowledge of and no interest in jewelry at the time. But I did sign up -- and I have never looked back.

I was surprised to find that the basic jewelry skills came easily to me. I loved the small scale and I loved exploring traditional jewelers' tools and techniques. Metal was the perfect medium for my skill set: patience and close attention to detail.

All of the work in my shop is mine, made from my own designs. I work alone, though I do have some of the components cast by a local Seattle company. I use these in some of my pieces in order to cut down on my time and keep them affordable. These components were designed by me and are made from prototypes that I have created myself, by hand, from metal, using traditional jewelry making techniques.

My style involves mixing different metals and creating moving parts. My pieces are fun and unexpected, but never whimsical. I enjoy the mechanics of jewelry and the challenge of making intricate pieces that require planning and forethought.

Shop policies

Last updated on February 6, 2018
Welcome to my Etsy shop. I want your purchase to be a good experience and I want you to be happy with your jewelry. Many of my Seattle customers are return buyers, buying either for themselves or for their friends, family, and coworkers. This is the relationship I strive for with anyone who buys my work.

I will gladly make small alterations to listed items upon request. This would include things like: ring sizes, chain lengths for necklaces, bead and stone selection, metal choices, metal patterns, etc. If an item listing already offers these options, you can go ahead and purchase that item, requesting any changes in the "Notes To Seller" section at checkout. Otherwise, please contact me for details and a price quote.

If you would like a custom piece made from an original idea, please send me a request through my shop and I will see what I can do. I enjoy doing custom work and I welcome requests. It can take anywhere up to eight weeks to fill a custom order and get it shipped. If I have to order materials for your order, it may take longer. I will try to keep in contact with you throughout the time I am working on your order, but feel free to contact me for a status update.

I believe in equality and diversity, and fully support the LGBTQ community. We all deserve a chance to live happily ever after! You will find several examples of same-sex couples’ rings in my shop, but I am happy to provide two of the same band from any set (rather than one traditional “men’s” band and one “women’s” band). If there is a set you’d like but don’t see listed in my shop, please feel free to contact me.

If you need help determining your ring size, please email me with your shipping address and I will mail out a free ring sizer (see Refund Policy below for further details).

I don't accept cancellations
But please contact me if you have any problems with your order.
The following items can't be returned or exchanged
Because of the nature of these items, unless they arrive damaged or defective, I can't accept returns for:
  • Custom or personalized orders
  • Perishable products (like food or flowers)
  • Digital downloads
  • Intimate items (for health/hygiene reasons)
Returns and exchange details
Please be sure to provide me with accurate ring sizes. I create each ring for you personally and generally do not stock an inventory of my work. Because of the nature of these rings, many cannot easily be made smaller and can often only be stretched larger by a half size.

If you are unsure of your size, I would be happy to send you a free ring sizer. Using the ring sizer is an easy way to determine your size (or double-check your size if you think you already know it). Please note that going to a jeweler or knowing the size of another ring that you wear is not always an accurate gauge of your size because the equipment that jewelers use to make and size rings may not be consistent. My tools are consistent with the sizers I send out so I’ve found using my sizers to be an accurate way to determine your size. If you use my sizer and your ring still requires a size adjustment after you've received it, I will be happy to waive the resizing fee and charge only shipping. Otherwise, a $25 fee will apply to simple resizes (stretched bigger by up to a half size), and a restocking fee of up to $75 will apply in cases where I need to make you a new ring or if you decide to return your ring.

When you order, please put the date when you will need the rings in the Notes To Seller section at checkout so that I can account for the shipping time (especially if your wedding date is soon). Also, please write out a quick reminder of any other changes to the design that we may have discussed in emails. Having this information on your receipt is useful as I use it as the work order for making your rings.

I cannot accept returns on custom items that I have made especially for you.

If you receive an item that is not to your satisfaction for any reason, please contact me upon receipt and I will work with you to correct the situation, repairing or altering the item as needed or allowing you to exchange or return it. All exchanges must be shipped back to me within 7 days of receipt and should be sent back insured. If you do not insure the item, I cannot be responsible for it being lost or damaged in transit.
Payment
Payment must be made in full before an item is shipped. I primarily accept Etsy's Direct Checkout and PayPal. You can pay with a credit card or check through PayPal if you do not have a PayPal account. Other forms of payment will be considered but will invariably add time to your order. If you pay through PayPal with a check, I will need to wait for that check to clear before shipping your item -- this generally takes about a week. Please keep this in mind if you are faced with a tight deadline.

All custom orders must be paid in advance.
Shipping
I ship out most of my earrings and necklaces via USPS First Class Mail, which usually arrives domestically (inside the U.S.) within one week. Wedding jewelry and more expensive pieces are shipped either by USPS Priority Mail or Priority Express Mail, depending upon the dollar amount. For security purposes, I request a signature for items shipped via Priority Express Mail. Let me know if you would like to have me waive the signature for your package. For standard items, you can upgrade the shipping for an additional fee if you need your items by a specific date. I am happy to work with you whenever I can.

I will email you to confirm both receipt of your order and that your order has shipped. Please watch for these emails. If you have a spam filter on your personal email account, you might not receive these emails. Feel free to contact me via Etsy if you do not hear from me, especially if you have questions or concerns about your order.

I will ship to the address on your Etsy receipt rather than the one on your Paypal account unless you request otherwise.

Items are shipped in an attractive jewelry box in a padded envelope to protect against damage.

If your purchase is a gift and you are having me ship it directly to the recipient, I will gladly include a note from you on request-- just let me know who the gift is for and what you would like the note to say when you place the order. I can leave out the invoice on all gift shipments upon request.

Finally, I do ship internationally but I cannot be responsible for any customs fees that may arise on shipments sent out of the United States and I am unable to comply with requests to mark the customs form field as "Gift."
Additional policies and FAQs
Caring for the jewelry you buy from me:

Most of the jewelry in my shop has been given a patina finish, meaning it has been darkened and then buffed so that the high areas are the color of the underlying metal while the low, indented areas remain dark. To keep this jewelry looking its best, there are a couple of precautions you should take. First of all, try to limit the exposure of your jewelry to any chemicals. Chemicals may loosen the bond between the patina and the metal and cause the patina to fade or wash away. These can include dish soaps, shampoos, or household cleaning products. Even hand soaps may include mild abrasives, perfumes, and anti-bacterial agents that may adversely affect your jewelry’s finish.

As for cleaning your jewelry, the recommended method depends on the item. My silver and brass patterned pieces have a matte finish and so can be very lightly buffed with a scotch-brite pad similar to those you might use when washing dishes. My filigree work is given a shiny, glossy finish and should be cleaned with a jeweler’s cloth which can be found inexpensively at most jewelry shops, including those at most department stores.

If your jewelry has stones, I would recommend contacting me prior to cleaning as certain stones are very soft and may possibly be damaged while cleaning. Also, since silver is a relatively soft metal, it is not recommended that you wear your rings without gloves when doing chores like gardening or working on your car, as this could leave scratches on the metal.

Your privacy is important! This Privacy Policy describes how and when I collect, use, and share information when you purchase an item from me, contact me, or otherwise use my services.

To fulfill your order, you must provide me with certain information such as your name, email address, postal address, payment information, and the details of the product that you are ordering.
