I am attempting to move to more sustainable products in my packaging. Like so many of our current environmental issues, there are dozens of angles to consider and many directly conflict with one another. In situations like that, where every argument has a compelling counter-argument, I try to find the angle or angles that are most important to me and focus on fixing those, because nothing (at this time) is going to give us a 100% solution. At best, semi-sustainable is at least a stepping stone to sustainable--a gateway, one hopes, to change. My biggest issues (related to the long-term health of wild hermit crabs) are plastics on the beach, ingestion of plastics by animals, and the endocrine disruptors that plastics emit as they photodegrade. So I picked a PLA plastic substitute (for now) knowing that it isn't ideal, but at least checks off my biggest concerns as they relate to hermit crabs--PLA may not biodegrade in a landfill, but it WILL biodegrade on a hot, sandy beach, in the ocean, or in a humid, tropical climate where hermit crabs are present. And it won't photodegrade into smaller pieces that are still chemically plastic, ingestible by sea life who mistake it for food, and it doesn't mimic estrogens as it breaks down, a problem which I believe is going to become a HUGE issue for all species going forward. It's already been documented as causing major genetic problems in aquatic systems, particularly amphibians. And issues that plague amphibians (plenty disturbing enough) often portend issues that will eventually affect the rest of us. While my efforts are not perfect, I do them now with the hope that an attempt to shift away from single-use plastics will drive companies and corporations to continue to develop better and more sustainable substitutes. Thank you for supporting my efforts.

5 out of 5 starsEven after my crabs had a massive rave, there was no spilled or tipped over oil!

5 out of 5 starsThese dishes are beautiful and functional! I hadn’t realized hermit crabs needed fresh oils until I saw the dish and researched further about it. Same day we received this dish and set out for our hermies, they were on it enjoying some fresh, cold-pressed olive oils! This dish is a must for our hermit crabs!

5 out of 5 starsI honestly love this dish so much I will be purchasing more in the future in any colors available. It's great for offering a variety of foods, and the size is perfect! Slim enough to fit anywhere in the tank, doesn't take up a ton of room, yet holds plenty! It's just so cute. Perfect all around. Wonderful seller. Thank you!!

I began selling earthenware dishes to fund my hermit crab breeding attempts (in hopes that someday pet hermits won't have to be harvested from the wild). Demand was so great, I opened this Etsy shop. I seem to have found an oddball, unique niche.

Allergens
I create work and package goods in a smoke-free environment, but I do have a dog who frequents my shop. I reuse packing materials whenever possible (the world has quite enough bubble wrap already) but can use all new materials if requested. I sell shellfish, nuts and other items that may cause an allergic reaction and it is possible for items to be cross contaminated during packaging. It is your responsibility to know your allergies and order accordingly.
