Elenware Holy Sheramics
Working with clay is a centering, mystical and transformative experience for me. All my pieces are made with loving reverence as they transform a part of Mother Earth into a vessel of love for nourishing each user's body and soul. When I touch, form and hold the clay I feel her nurturing love. The plates, bowls, center pieces, mugs, cups and jewelry I create are a physical manifestation of this love. I often texture the outside of wheel-thrown and slab-built pieces with a piece of coral I found in Maui, Hawaii or other found objects. As I texture each piece I infuse it with healing energy from my heart. My Sufi teacher first explained this idea to me many years ago and my work in Sat Nam Rasayan ® has made me more effective at it. Reptiles, sea imagery, feminine forms and goddesses constantly find their way into my work. I am fascinated by sacred symbols.
I started studying pottery informally in 1983 when I lived in London and had the good fortune to study with teachers from all over the world. Being a native Californian, I found the colorful multicultural influences, yet constant gray skies of London inspiration to look inward and create. It wasn't until I first moved to Barcelona in 1988 that I was able to seriously dedicate time to working with clay.
I have been very influenced by Native American design. My father had a collection of Native American pottery and crafts that was museum quality. We often travelled to Pow Wows and other Native American events during my childhood.
Several people have used the Japanese term "Wabi Sabi" when describing my work. I find it quite appropriate as it's about finding the perfection in imperfection and valuing what makes each piece unique.
