Years of watching TV are finally paying off!
I combined two of my favorite things: model making and TV. I have been making models for many years and decided to start making models based on the sets of classic TV shows. I stated with the Golden Girls set, because it is my favorite show.
I start by designing the layout of each set. Since I have only the TV shows themselves to work with and no blueprints or sketches of the sets, I have to imagine what the dimensions and angles are. Sometimes I'm lucky to find some behind the scenes pictures that help me resolve issues with the layout. I then have to draw each and every wall and piece of furniture. Next, I print all the pieces on high resolution artist paper and mount the pieces on boards. The pieces are cut and assembled, and voila!
I really enjoy doing the design work most. Even though I have seen each of the shows dozens of times, I have to continuously reference the source material so that I get the details right. For the Golden Girls set and the Mary Tyler Moore set, I had to pause the shows several times as I sketched some of the pieces of furniture and wall hangings.
One of the things that made many fans happy was the inclusion of details from specific episodes... the "easter eggs" that only true fans would nerd out about. I hide props from these episodes within the miniature and included a diagram with the list so people can find them.
