I have become rather passionate over the last decade about reducing my environmental footprint, and it was when using cloth nappies for my first child almost 11 years ago, that I discovered cloth menstrual pads. So comfortable, so bright and fun! No more horrible paper every month, no more plastic wrappers or fiddly sticky stuff. I tried at least a dozen different pads, then realised how fun they were to make! And I have been sewing them ever since.
Bamboo velour is one of my favourite fabrics, and works with the bamboo fleece to create a highly-absorbent and luxury pad! I also love dyeing fabrics, which I started as a teenager with a tie-dye kit and moved on to natural dyes, Procion dyes, acid dyeing and experimenting with different methods. I mostly use Procion dyes as their colour stays vibrant, but also make pads from unique stenciled fabric. Cloth menstrual pads are kinder to yourself, to the environment, and to your purse :)

5 out of 5 starsWhen I say I couldn’t stop staring at these pads when they arrived, I’m not kidding! Such gorgeous dyed colour ways, even my partner remarked they looked cool when I had hung them up to dry. Whilst these pads might look on the thicker end, they contour so well to my body that they don’t feel bulky, so it isn’t a problem at all. Super comfy, super gorgeous, and super absorbent.

5 out of 5 starsDelighted with these pads. They are absolutely gorgeous; vivid jewelled tones in various absorbencies and lengths. The backing on each is so soft, as is the top layer. The snaps match the purple/green of each pad and the heart label tag is adorable with a helpful indicator of R (Regular) and H (Heavy). FaeryFluff was so lovely to work with; offering different colours/sizes/materials, helping me decide. Every piece of fabric is hand dyed (so each tie dye print is unique) and she made this as a custom order for me. 10/10 highly recommend!

Frequently asked questions
What’s so great about cloth pads?
Cloth menstrual pads are a wonderful alternative to disposable pads. Some of the reasons why many women are switching to reusable sanitary products are:
- They are eco-friendly as they can be washed and used for years, keeping lots of paper and plastic out of landfill and our oceans.
- Cloth pads are more comfortable to wear and there are no harsh gels or bleaches to irritate your intimate area.
- They are also easy to wash and use - care instructions are included with your order.
- They can be used as your usual menstrual products, or alongside a menstrual cup or disposable pads.
- Sizes available from small pantyliners and thong pads, to night-time and post-partum pads.
What absorbencies are available?
Faery Fluff pads have a small tag sewn into the wing of each pad to indicate absorbency (when snapped, the tag will be underneath the other wing so it doesn't rub on your skin!) Pads can be made in five absorbency options.
Pantyliner (PL) - one layer organic cotton flannel
Light (L) - bamboo fleece
Regular (R) - bamboo fleece x2
Heavy (H) - bamboo fleece x3
Superheavy (SH) – bamboo fleece x4
What sizes do you offer?
Faery Fluff pads range in size from 6 inches to 18 inches using the Versodile pattern. Although I am happy to take custom orders for whatever size you require, just convo me!
Thong pads can be made 6, 7 and 8 inches long.
Juliette pads can be made in 8, 9.5, 10.5, 11.5, 12.5 and 13.5 inches. They are about an inch longer than that due to the decorative pointed ends.
How do I wash cloth pads?
Pads can be stored dry after use. To prevent staining however, it is recommended to rinse in cold water and store damp, or in a pail of water. A little salt, bicarbonate of soda or a few drops of essential oils in the water will help prevent odours and bacteria growth.
Wash at 40 or 60 degrees. (Washing at 40 is better for the pads and will prolong their lifespan). Do not use fabric conditioner as this will affect the absorbency of the pad. Can be tumble dried on a low heat. High heat is NOT a good idea as it can scorch the fabric.
If you have any questions about the use of cloth pads, please do get in touch, I’m always happy to help.
What materials do you use?
Bamboo is a more sustainable crop than cotton. It requires less water to cultivate and process, fewer pesticides and is less damaging to soil as it grows. The resulting fabric is soft and silky and does not stiffen up the way cotton does after many washes. I use a premium weight bamboo fleece which holds more water than the same weight of cotton would. It also increases its absorbency with washing and will be at maximum absorbency after about 8-10 washes.
The bamboo velour top is also a premium weight fabric, and is hand-dyed by me. It is rinsed well using Synthrapol detergent to ensure least chance of dye run. (As with all hand-dyed items though, they should be washed separately or with similar colours until you are sure it won't run!
Why are your pads priced differently?
Pads are priced according to length and absorbency and the current price list can be viewed in the custom order listings.
Shaped pads have an additional charge due to the extra time they require to make:
Juliette +£2
Cat +£2
Dragon +£3
Flame +£3
Pads with a stenciled design are priced higher, as the design is stenciled by hand and the fabric steamed to remove the colour. A time consuming process but it makes beautiful, unique pads!
The additional charge is based on pad length as follows:
6, 7, 8 inch pads + £1.50
9, 10, 11 inch pads + £2.50
12, 13, 14 inch pads + £3.50
15, 16, 17, 18 inch pads + £4.50
