Announcement   If you are interested in naturally dyed wool and silk roving, art batts and rolags, this is the place to be. Craft tools as well as fiber art are also always available!

There are currently over 40 naturally dyed shades available, on fiber such as Romney, Merino, Alpaca, Mohair, Cotswold, tussah silk and mulberry silk.
Natural, undyed wool is also available from breeds such as Romney, Icelandic, Cotswold, Alpaca, Shetland, BFL, merino and mulberry and Tussah silk.

For more than 14 years I have been fascinated by what nature provides for the creative realm.

The idea of dyeing with natural dye substances was inspired by my close connection to our local Waldorf (Steiner) school.
Unlike synthetic colours, which are mono-chromatic, natural dyes create a variety of colours in each dye bath, and unlike synthetic colours, each shade goes harmonically with every other shade, never clashing.

At Fairy Tale Wool we pay attention to all processes, starting with the origin, proximity and quality of the sheered fleece and ending with appeal and convenience of the finished product.
All fibers are carefully selected, sorted, washed by hand, naturally hand dyed, and finally teased/ carded and packaged.
It's important to us that everything used in our processes comes from the shortest distance possible. We also use dye recipes which use the least amount of water and mordants possible and achieve as many shades possible in each dye batch.

If you are looking for a specific shade and cannot find it, please send me a direct message. Chances are that I can produce it. Exceptions are turquoise and azure.

A word on shipments within Canada and abroad:
Canada Post is one of the most expensive postal services worldwide.
So some shipping fees that you see attached to my products seem horrendous. They are the estimated cost for the longest distance within Canada and are often cheaper than announced. In such cases I will always refund any differences as soon as your order ships.
Shipments within Canada are expedited and tracked, all others are standard and untracked. If you need expedited or prefer tracked shipping internationally (to be recommended to certain countries), please contact me prior to ordering and I create a reserved listing with increased cost of shipping for you.
Orders for CAN$100 and over will ship for free within North-America. International orders CAN$100 and over ship for half price.

Updates

This is the first time that Fairy Tale Wool is offering one-of-a kind, all-naturally dyed and speckled yarn. I'm really excited about future colourways. And even though it takes many days to create them, I'll try my best to keep prices competitiveblush
For those of you who are still experiencing extremely cold weather and want to rock it in style, and for everyone else, too: hand-felted, one-of-a-kind mittens, made from fine merino wool, with or without an art yarn cuff. Send me a convo for details.
I'm happy to report that the design of our icord knitter/ lucet 'Loopy Lucy' has been further improved. It's now easier than ever to knit your art yarns, thicker yarns and pencil roving into thick, beautiful 3dimentional icord. Felt it further into rope.

About

Vibrant Colours - Directly From Nature!

Fairytale Wool was born out of a fascination for nature's beauty and a need for producing naturally dyed wool fleece/ roving sustainably.

It all started locally on the Sunshine Coast, BC, and was meant to provide our small Waldorf School and its community with affordable naturally dyed wool fleece. But due to an active greater crafting community, Fairy Tale Wool soon grew into its current size.

Except for merino wool and silk, all our fibers are sourced from BC, Canada, mostly from Saltspring Island, an island with a long history of fiber excellence.

All dyes are derived from nature: petals (e.g. marigold), roots (e.g. madder), skins (e.g. onion), leaves (e.g. Indigo), mushrooms, lichen, and even little bugs (cochineal and lac). We try to grow some of them in our own, bio-dynamic garden and use them, whenever available.

Due to our special water all dye batches are very consistent, which is not always easy to achieve in natural dyeing.

Apart from the usual production line, we also experiment with anything to do with fiber arts, and sometimes we even sell these creations. Just keep an eye on shop updates!

Some of our products can also be found at local stores and art galleries. If you're in the area, let us know and we can guide you in the right direction.

Like any good business, ours is founded on great relationships, inside the business (family) as well as in the greater community. Networking with close-by sheep breeders, producers of natural dyes as well as with other 'makers' is fundamental to our success.

From a young age on I couldn't keep my fingers off any fiber. Taught early by my grandmother, I tried everything from sewing, fair isle knitting, crochet to clay work and later felting. These days I'm very much into weaving and spinning.
