From Governors Island: New York Harbor, an artist's panorama folding book
I was selected to be part of a residency with privileged access on Governors Island off the tip of Manhattan in 2007. Sponsored by the New York Studio School Alumni Association, about 20 artists worked on the island during the summer. During the first few days on the island, I painted my way from the Statue of Liberty to the Verrazano Narrows Bridge using watercolor and gouache on 4x6 inch watercolor paper. The entire panorama is 19 panels or 10 feet long.
Painting on Governors Island was an extraordinary experience because the island was not open to the public and we painted with solitude and privacy. I was drawn to the skyline and couldn’t wait to paint New York from the water. It is a landscape view of a great city, surrounded by lively water and a big sky. I loved painting this urban landscape, especially the panorama.
After the residency, I collaborated with book designers to translate the 10 foot long panorama into a book and worked with Meridian Printing to reproduce the painting as a folding book in order to bring the beauty of NYC from my original painting into your home.
The book can be viewed in its 10 foot entirety, or folded and displayed neatly to feature your favorite part of the city. Hold the New York skyline in your hand with this book!
