My name is Joseph A Freedman.
I created Freedman Pens, where we take salvaged old growth redwood and turn them into pens.
BUT FIRST, you must hear my backstory...
It all started when I was 14 and practicing wilderness survival and homesteading skills which lead to the traditional arts like woodworking. As an artist you see an image or an idea in your mind, and you physically bring it into reality.
Woodworking and blacksmithing became an outlet for me at a young age to express the frustrations I had at the time, into something artistic and creative.
I became a student of the Blue Ox Mills in my senior year of highschool, and turned bowls, cups, and made daggers and swords in the blacksmith shop. But one Sunday evening, I watched a seven minute video from Dan Lok titled "Sell Me This Pen" and I took it literally. The next day I decided to make three pens and I managed to sell all three that very day at my Boy Scout meeting. That year, I sold over 100 of them. That's the power of a single idea and taking action on it.
If there's one thing I want you to take away from the story it's this... When you know you really want something in life, it could be a career, a fitness goal, traveling, or even a redwood pen made by a kid, don't be afraid to go after it.
You will stand out, people might not understand you, but you must embrace that. Your difference is what makes a difference in the world!
