I have always been drawn to a particular quality of light. I love the way the rays of the late afternoon sun might fall across a wall - or stumbling across a small patch of sunlight that has found its way to the floor of a dense forest. As a kid, I was fascinated by the glow-in-the-dark stars and the bubble lights that were on our Christmas tree. At fourteen, I hung a bare branch over my bed and decorated it with a string of “fairy lights”. (I have had a similar branch above just about every bed I have owned ever since.) My preferred interior lighting is what I call the “low glow” that can be achieved with strings of tiny incandescent bulbs and votive candles lit in beautiful glass containers.

About fifteen years ago, I discovered handmade papers and began experimenting making lamp shades and shoji screens. Back then, I had a vision of myself as an artist creating original pieces with light and beautiful paper, but I didn't trust my inner voice.

I do now.

In the spring of 2015, I said goodbye to 25 years in film and video production, cleared out a little studio space in my basement and began building my lamps. The process of choosing the papers, the colors and the style makes me incredibly happy and I love the glow that each one produces. I've been fortunate in that my family and friends seem to love them as well.

I make each of my lamps by hand with care, beginning with the frame. I create a "canvas" of either Japanese kinwashi paper or styrene for my larger lamps and then layer them with paper. Each lamp has a finish coating of an acrylic medium and a finish spray of UV protectant archival spray varnish. The oak legs are sanded and finished with Tung Oil. Every lamp comes complete with a bulb and are securely packed for safe shipping.
