Following the Golden Thread
A couple of years ago, my husband bought a workbench. I was skeptical about it - "Are you really going to use that?" - and let's be honest, he's used it maybe once. But in fact, I found it handy when I bought an old dresser on craigslist to paint and distress, shabby chic style. Later I found myself down in the workshop area again, using the saw to make a coat rack from an old piece of antique trim I found in my neighbor's scrap bin. Soon I was down there every weekend, then every day, trying some new project.
My power tool collection grew - I bought a jigsaw, a circular saw, a high-powered drill. I began to spend more money at Home Depot than anywhere else, drooling over the copper pipe and door hardware and speciality drill bits. I brought home dozens of small sample jars of paint, screws of various lengths, stains and waxes and electrical bits.
I loved the creativity of designing a project, my solitude in the workshop, the labor that wore me out but left me feeling strong and accomplished. I taught myself how to pour cement, how to wire lamps, how to build things out of wood. I made plenty of mistakes - still do, now and then - but I began to make some pretty cool stuff.
I always eagerly showed my goods to my friends, who urged me - "You have got to start selling this stuff!" And so Golden Thread Goods was born! I hope you enjoy the goods I have crafted.
PS - If you're curious about the shop name, it's linked to my namesake - the mythical Greek princess Ariadne. She used a golden thread to help Theseus through the labyrinth, changing her own fate forever.
