Professional photographer turned professional soap maker :D
Hello, all the way from Hawaii!
Thank you so much for stopping by.
A little about myself. I bought a one-way ticket to Hawaii back in 1980, and I've been here ever since. I got married to a local boy in 1982, and we started a photography business in 1984. I was a makeup artist already, so that came in handy when we started photographing weddings. We sadly closed our business back in 2010 due to various trials.
We have five adult children and whoa, 13 grandchildren, and Lord willing more to come!
Why did I make the switch to making soap?
After closing our photography studio I tried other jobs, but eventually I ended up living on the north shore with my eldest daughter, and her husband helping them with their growing family. I lived in a tiny home on their property in Haleiwa, Hawaii, but now live in a larger space above my second daughter’s home. I love watching my grandchildren, but I desired something creative to do besides being a full time grandmother; something that would garner some income without having to get a job working for someone else. I came across a video of someone demonstrating their soap making process, and thought it was very interesting, and a good life skill to have. So, I started learning how to make soap. My soaps turned out so good I decided to start a new small business, so that I could share my healthy, nourishing plant-based soaps with others, and earn a small income too.
I chose Grams' True Soap for my business name because my grands call me Grams, and I make true soap; soaps that are made with three main ingredients: fatty acids (oils and butters), liquid such as: distilled water, coconut milk, aloe vera juice etc.., and sodium hydroxide, which gets used up in the saponification process.
From the very beginning I chose to make plant-based soaps using natural ingredients, because our skin is the largest organ, and whatever goes on our skin gets absorbed into the body. Some of my favorite ingredients to use are coconut milk and oat milk, goat milk, olive oil, coconut oil, shea butter, cocoa butter, castor bean oil, Sunflower oil. almond oil. I use quality essential oils for fragrance. I also use ingredients such as cocao powder, activated charcoal, bentonite clay (both charcoal and clay are great to balance oily complexions) rose kaolin clay, and other natural clays, Pink Himalayan salt for hardness, and raw sugar for lather.
My soaps have a creamy, luxurious feel and leave your skin feeling clean and moisturized.
Aloha,
Kimberly
