In September of 2010, I decided to start my own business after finding myself unemployed. Always a creative type, I decided to try my hand at creating costume jewelry, birthing the Etsy shop AmericanBeauties. I sold online and at craft shows, learning a lot along the way about inventory, customer service, and modern craft jewelry.

Then, the following year, I started law school. Probably the most stressful thing I've ever done. I quickly realized about halfway through my first semester that there was no realistic way I could continue to maintain a viable jewelry shop and get good grades.

Thus, I began selling the beads instead, and GreatLakesBeads began. I still get my creative fix, and I try to fill the gap I found when buying beads for jewelry myself: quality beads at not outrageous prices. Any beader knows that it's easy to drop a whole paycheck on beads and findings. I try to provide a source for beads that doesn't hurt the wallet quite so much, because I've been there.
