Why Recycled Glass?
It's simple: Why throw it away when you can make something beautiful?
I come from a family of savers (of stuff). My grandmother was a saver of pretty much everything--Christmas cards, newspapers, margarine tubs, rubber bands, toilet paper tubes. Sometimes we'd make new stuff with it--like Christmas trees from folded copies of Readers' Digest--and sometimes we'd just reuse it.
My mother thought my grandmother was a borderline hoarder and hated this about her, but my mother saved stuff, too, because (I think) she couldn't help it. Except she was a dedicated recycler--everything she saved she put in the recycling bin. She would often go far out of her way to make sure her precious recycling made it into the right container.
In my glasswork, I try to honor them both by saving as much glass as I can and remaking it into something pretty to enjoy. While bottle glass comes in only a few colors--blues, greens, olives--those colors make a pleasant palette. And whether it used to be a wine bottle holding MacMurray Pinot Noir, a kombucha bottle formerly full of Brew Dr., or just a plain old pickle jar, your recycled glass item has made the journey from utilitarian to decorative, avoiding the landfill, brightening a window, and reaffirming the value of reuse.
