Your Pet in Glass

When I took my first stained glass class twelve years ago, it wasn't so much that I had always wanted to learn how to do stained glass, I just wanted to get out of the house. My daughter was 4, my son was 12. For an hour twice a week I had permission to be somewhere else, talking to other grownups, learning something new, making stuff.

About a year later, at the suggestion of my dogs' obedience instructor, I started doing pet portraits in glass and selling at local craft shows and dog shows.

The more I worked with custom orders, the more I felt the limits of what I could do with basic stained glass. Glass doesn't come in "brindle," for example, and I prefer portraits that are more representational than abstract, so my search for brindle glass ultimately led me to fusing. Now fusing is a whole other discipline entirely, and I could go on and on about it, but I won't. In a nutshell, it's fun to melt stuff. You can never be completely sure what you're going to get until you open the kiln (generally about 12 hours after you closed it). Every piece is different, and I'm always experimenting with new techniques and materials. (In the last few years I've gotten into traditional glass painting, and I'm enjoying developing new artistic uses for recycled glass.) I now often combine several techniques in the same portrait or project. Some portraits come out great the first time; others take 3 or 4 attempts. It's the challenge of creating something just so in a medium that changes as the light changes that keeps me at it. I love working with glass.

I do all of my work in my basement studio (aka "The Laundry Room") which opens conveniently onto my garden. I say conveniently because the my dog is constantly going in and out all day. (In the summer I just leave the door open.) Even with all of her busy comings and goings, she keeps an eye on me, reminding me when it's time to eat, or get a drink of water, or play tug. All in all, not a bad way to pass the time.

I enjoy the challenge of creating a realistic pet portrait in glass, whether it's traditional stained glass or more experimental fused glass. Don't see your pet here? I'm happy to work with you to create a custom pet portrait from your treasured photo (I can combine animals from different photos if necessary) in just about any size, from small suncatcher to large window panel. I can create panels that you hang inside or that you can use to replace actual windows. Panels can be framed in lead, zinc, or wood.
All of my pieces are created by me, one at a time. I do not offer wholesale pricing or volume discounts. It takes me just as much time to make 30 of something as it does to make one.

Returns and exchange details
I want you to be happy with your order, so if you aren't, please contact me right away so that I can make it right. If it's a non-custom item and you're really not happy, go ahead and return it (your expense; email me first), and I will refund your purchase price.

Custom orders are final sales. They are not returnable. I have several different technique examples in my shop. Make sure you request a custom order in the same style that you want your piece to be. Ask questions! If there are certain colors you love or hate, or if you need a background the same color as your couch, just say so. I will do my best to make exactly what you want. I send photos of all custom work before I ship them. If the photo doesn't look right to you, please say so before I ship!

Damage: My pieces take a long time to complete, so I am very careful about how I package them to ensure that they arrive safely. I ship mostly USPS or UPS, so if the unthinkable happens, we deal with them. Please notify me immediately if your item arrives in pieces.

Bottom Line: I want you to be satisfied with your purchase. Actually, I want you to be really really hyperactively thrilled with your purchase. If you're not, please contact me directly to give me an opportunity to address any concerns you may have.
All orders (including custom orders that require a custom pattern) require payment in full up front, no exceptions.
Single, small items will ship USPS 1st class mail. If you are ordering a single item and want USPS Priority Shipping, please convo me to arrange an additional fee.

I do not ship international because of all the extra taxes and customs duties. If you are an international buyer and really really want something, I will sell it to you, but you are responsible for all the extra fees that may result.
Additional policies and FAQs
All my stuff is handmade by me, one piece at a time, no assistants or shortcuts. I would love to do my shop work 24/7, but family demands dinner, clean clothes, transportation, and appearance at/participation in important events on a regular basis, so sometimes projects take longer because there is other life stuff that needs attending to.

Also, kiln work takes time. Sometimes a lot of time. Custom fused pieces can take anywhere from a week to two months. Large stained glass panels can take several weeks. If you need something by a certain date, please say so and I will do my best to make it happen.

Finally, I retain the copyright on all items that I make. I make no claim of ownership on customer photos submitted for custom work; however, I reserve the right to use any submitted customer photos for advertising purposes. My stained and fused glass patterns (including custom patterns) are all original, owned by me. Patterns may not be used to make multiple copies of my pieces for resale. Custom pieces with wide appeal may also be offered for sale to the general public.
