A Hobby That Got Out of Hand (In the Best Way)
It all started during the first lockdown. I was bored, restless, and surrounded by empty jars and cans too nice to throw away. So I began experimenting - wax blends, wick sizes, fragrance ratios - until I cracked the formula for long-burning candles with strong but not overpowering scents.
Then came the upcycling itch. Why melt down beautifully engineered containers when you could turn them into candles? So I did. And I was pretty chuffed with myself.
But then friends and family wanted some. Then their friends. And suddenly, my kitchen smelled like a wax lab and my recycling bin was a treasure trove.
Now, any profit fuels the next wacky idea. I’ve started 3D printing candle moulds -think Buddha with Darth Vader’s head, Einstein busts, animal skulls. Got a weird idea? I might just make it.
So far, I’ve upcycled hundreds of cans, jars, and bottles. People seem genuinely pleased, which is flattering. And more folks get to enjoy soy, rapeseed, coconut, and sunflower wax candles that smell good and burn clean.
It’s still a hobby. It just happens to pay for itself.
