The soaps, body butters and sugar scrubs I prepare in small batches speak to my childhood and native home, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, an island nation in the Caribbean. They bring with them the intoxicating scents and vibrant colors of a place like no other. Using coconut, sweet almond and avocado oils blended with fragrance and essential oils, such as Coconut, Cinnamon and Birds of Paradise, each handmade piece is a story—my story—that I happily share with you.
In Saint Vincent so much is made by hand using available materials, and our food is more often plucked from the ocean or a tree, than the supermarket. You share with your family or buy from your neighbor, with personal craftsmanship appreciated for its character and imperfections. The custom products I make are an extension of that culture.
I now live in Little Elm, Texas, but my most vivid memory of home is at the beach in Indian Bay. It’s where I learned how to swim, where my mom took me nearly every Saturday to cool down, and where birthday parties were spent having fun with my best friend. I still visit, and even now all I have to do is close my eyes, and I’m there with the endless black sands, crystal cool waters and carefree childhood of a simpler time.
My Indian Bay soap scent can send you there too. Rum Punch takes its name from a flavorful yet potent drink that you can find in almost every Caribbean Island. And Frangipani is a fragrant flower that grows all over Saint Vincent. The list goes on, but with fragrances like Buttered Rum, Birds of Paradise, and Coconut Cream, every scent captures a moment or feeling I’ve had, and hope you get a chance to experience on the island I call home.
Note: Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is an island country in the Lesser Antilles, in the southern portion of the Windward Islands. It was called Hairouna (hi-rune-a) by the indigenous people of the island, the Caribs, which the region was named after. Hairouna means “Land of the Blessed.”
