Frequently asked questions

What is Expanded foam PVC?

Expanded foam PVC, also known as expanded polyvinyl chloride, is a lightweight and versatile plastic material commonly used in various applications. It is created by expanding and foaming PVC sheets, resulting in a cellular structure with a high strength-to-weight ratio.

What are the benefits of PVC?

Expanded foam PVC offers several beneficial properties that make it suitable for a wide range of uses. Firstly, it is lightweight, which makes it easy to handle and install. Despite its lightweight nature, it retains a remarkable level of strength and durability, making it ideal for both indoor and outdoor applications.

Another advantage of expanded foam PVC is its resistance to moisture and chemicals. This characteristic makes it highly suitable for applications where exposure to water or corrosive substances is expected. It is also non-porous, which means it does not absorb water or other liquids, making it resistant to rot, mold, and mildew.

What is your return Policy?

All of items are made to order and Made-to-order items are uniquely created or customized according to the customer's specific requirements. Due to their personalized nature, these items often cannot be returned because they are tailored exclusively to the customer and may lack universal market appeal. Additionally, the production costs, limited demand, and the risk of damage make it impractical for manufacturers to accept returns on made-to-order items. Therefore, it is important for customers to carefully consider their choices before purchasing such items.

Do PVC shutter require painting?

PVC shutters do not require painting because their color is incorporated throughout the material during manufacturing. The PVC used in these shutters is UV-stable, meaning it won't fade or degrade from sun exposure. Additionally, PVC is resistant to moisture, durable, and low maintenance, eliminating the need for repainting. This makes PVC shutters a convenient and long-lasting choice for window treatments.

What are some recommended fasteners?

Any exterior-grade screw will work with our pvc shutters. (Be sure to not over-tighten)

Shutters smaller than 47” require 4 fasteners

Shutters larger than 47” require 6 fasteners

What is your warranty policy?

The warranty period is 5 years, with prorated coverage. If a manufacturing defect is identified, High Springs Shutter Company will refund the purchase price or replace the product accordingly. Labor charges are not covered. Repairs, replacements, refinishing, or coating are subject to the remaining warranty duration.
Normal weathering is not covered. This warranty supersedes all others and does not cover consequential or incidental damages.
Shutter Age Percent Covered
0-1 Years 100%
2-3 Years 75%
4 Years 50%
5 Years 25%

How Do I paint PVC Shutters if I choose to add color?

*Avoid painting in direct sunlight or on hot surfaces. This can cause warping*
Prior to painting, clean the surface with denatured alcohol.
For best results, use acrylic or urethane-based latex exterior paints. (Brands such as Sherwin Williams, Behr, and Gliden)
Always choose paints with a Light Reflective Value (LRV) of 55 or higher.
If you plan to paint in a darker color (LRV of 54 or lower), it is crucial to use Vinyl safe paint or paints. (Please refer to your paint manufacturer)
Latex paints may take 2-4 days to dry completely. Avoid exposing the shutters to dew, high humidity, moisture, or rain during this time.
For the best finish results, using a sprayer is recommended. However, if a sprayer is not available you can use a roller.

How do Install the shutters?

Align the top and bottom of the shutter with the window and mark its position.
Mark the shutter where it will be fastened.
Drill pilot holes into the facade at the top, middle, and bottom marks.
Remove the shutter and pre-drill the holes. Apply clear, paintable waterproof sealant to each hole.
Attach the shutter with recommended screws. Do not over-tighten.

***IMPORTANT: When installing the shutters on lap siding, it is crucial to adhere them to the highest point of the siding or utilize shims/spacers to fill any gaps and ensure a level installation.

Care instructions

Here are some simple care tips:

Regular Cleaning: Similar to interior shutters, regular cleaning is essential for exterior PVC shutters. Use a soft cloth or sponge with mild soapy water to remove dust, dirt, and grime. Rinse thoroughly with clean water afterward.

Pressure Washing: If your shutters have accumulated stubborn dirt or stains, you can use a pressure washer on a low setting to clean them. Be cautious not to use too much pressure, as it can damage the PVC surface.

Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Avoid using abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals on exterior shutters, as they can damage the PVC material. Stick to mild soapy water or specialized cleaners designed for PVC surfaces.

Sizing details

When deciding on the size of PVC shutters, there are key measurements to consider to ensure proper fit and functionality:

Height: Measure the height of the window opening from the top to the bottom. This measurement will determine the height of the shutters. For aesthetic purposes, you may want the shutters to extend slightly above and below the window frame.

Width: Measure the width of the window opening from side to side. This measurement will determine the width of each individual shutter panel. If you plan to have multiple panels per window, divide the total width by the number of panels to determine the width of each panel.

Double-check all measurements to ensure accuracy before ordering.
