Handmade items collected from 40 years of travel to West Africa and Egypt.

Discoveries Egyptian Imports is an adventure that began back in the summer of 1979, when I went to visit a college friend who was studying at University in Cairo. We traveled through Egypt, Syria, Jordan, and Turkey, purchasing handcrafts that we hoped to sell and pay for our trip. When we returned home, we set up booths at craft fairs, lugged suitcases full of trinkets into any kind of retail store that might be interested, and even took our chances street vending in New York City. It was great fun, and we had dreams of growing into a "real company" someday.

In the summer of 1980, with great assistance from family and friends, 'Discoveries – Ancient Arts' opened a store to the public on November 6, 1980, halfway down a cobblestone alley in Alexandria, Virginia. Since it was our intent to travel throughout the world to buy handcrafts, the name 'Discoveries' seemed to fit. And now, almost 40 years later, Discoveries Egyptian Imports has proven to be an adventure of a lifetime.
