From rags to... well...
It isn't always about the money is it?
I had three children and realized in the wake of an economic crisis, lower wages, less hours, yatta yatta yatta... I couldn't afford to go into an office (that Two-Income Trap thing). Luckily, I managed to land a job working from home, but my luck ran out when my hours were cut in half. The bright side? I have time to be creative and that's the humble beginnings of Turnip Mims (formerly Homemade by Kate).
Here's a little more of my background...
I write for Mother Earth Living and love to inform others about living naturally. I make our own soaps, cleaners... and use herbs instead of conventional medicines when treating my children. I also write for Everlasting Health Center, Reno’s best vitamin, supplement, herb and health food store since 1995 and Grains and More, a blog covering holistic health and eating well.
I live in a rural community in Floyd Virginia, surrounded by farmer's markets and organic farms. I enjoy raising chickens, organic gardening, whole food cooking, photography, and crafting of course. I obtained a B.A. in English with an emphasis on writing from Southern Oregon University and have been writing about nutrition, healthy living, cooking, and gardening for over nine years. I have also been working in marketing for over five years including social media marketing and blogging. I am a mother of three and spend my free time baking, growing and drying herbs, canning, crafting, and reading food labels (scary stuff).
What's with the Turnip?
Turnips are simple and healthy, but beautiful at the same time... just like Turnip Mims products.
Most people know a turnip when they see one... The turnip is a widely cultivated member of the mustard family with large fleshy edible roots and mild flavor, but did you know the turnip is a very symbolic object? Sure is. Look at it's shape and color for just a minute and you'll get it.
Love, that simple....
The turnip is a very symbolic object for love. It is believed if you dream about turnips your prospects will brighten and dreaming of sowing turnip seeds is believed to be foretelling of a future engagement.
Who knew something so simple could be so significant?
My Philosophy...
I don't like chemicals, simple as that, and I don't think we need them to clean and take care of ourselves. I also believe we have enough stuff on this planet to sustain us all for years to come and love re-purposing things, waste not want not. I am absolutely thrilled to see the amount of talent out there and I'm loving Etsy for making it possible to share.
There's always more to learn, but I am well informed and if I don't know the answer, I'll find it as I am an avid researcher. My Etsy shop is a representation of my beliefs and philosophy... and the turnip is my motive.
