In my closet

My mother was born in 1944 and married at the age of 16. She became an orphan at an early age and her greatest grief was that she left her family house empty handed, without something from her mother. As soon as my oldest sisters were born she began to embroider their dowry at her free time. She was constantly trying new styles and different kinds of needlework. At the age of 40 she was forced to slow down and gradually stopped creating due to health problems. She lost the battle with cancer in 2004 at the age of 60. I left my family house within that year. I took nothing with me. I couldn’t bear the idea of living at a home where everything reminded me of my mother. I was in bereavement and in great denial.

In 2009 my father’s heart condition deteriorated. I had to move back to my family house and help him out. He died a few days before Christmas in 2009. I am still trying to get used to my new life at my old family’s house without either of my parents. And the first thing that I have to face is my mother’s closet: a huge depository of needlework and handmade embroidery, knitting and sewing supplies, delicate linens purchased by traditional embroiderers from all over Greece and many more. Within this treasure trove I found the most valuable legacy of my mother: her sewing machine. I had a great urge to learn how to use it and make the best of it as my mother did.

My sister Vasiliki runs Yfansi, a weaving mill. Yfansi is a family owned business producing high quality products combining the experience of a passed down practice with the latest techniques in producing the best blankets, throws and pillows in Europe. It is one of the remaining textile companies in Greece with over 40 years of experience in producing the highest quality textiles. As soon as I asked for her help in learning how to sew, we began to discuss how we could cooperate and work together. After a few months of intense collaboration, brainstorming, planning and designing we decided to have a collaborative shop in etsy.

I take the photographs and create the designs and Vasiliki is weaving and printing the fabrics. Through our daily collaboration, we both explore ways to produce fine and unique creations.  We hope that we will also manage to make the best use of our common legacy: our mother's thingamajigs and her creations.

    Owner, Designer, Photography, Sewing, Shipping

Many years ago I decided I wanted to become a graphic designer. So I did. On my way to that I met photography and loved it with all my heart, since it was one of the most important tools of my profession. Crafting came later to light my way.

I own Yfansi, a weaving mill for many years. I create fabric for blankets, throws and pillows everyday. Anna came to me asking to show her how to use our mother's sewing machine. I thought that it was about time to collaborate and work together.
