Welcome to Iron Elephant Design! My name is Zach, and I am a maker. I am the creative type who dabbles in things big and small from reclaimed artsy wall décor to large custom wood furniture. I’ve always loved working with my hands and using my creative skill to take an idea and make it something tangible.
My shop name, Iron Elephant Design, was inspired from the combined hobbies of my two grandpas. My mother’s father was a collector of trains. He filled his entire basement, wall to wall, with HO gauge trains that ran over and through the scenery he built on his giant train table. He was a great man who worked hard and always had a joke to tell. My father’s father was a collector of elephants. His collection included a variety of wooden, brass, marble, and porcelain statues that filled a large china cabinet in his living room. He was a quiet man, but when he spoke you listened. He was also a hard worker and great role model.
Both of these men inspired me, and I decided to use the items they collected to inspire my name. Back in the early Victorian culture, the term "Iron Horse" was used as an expression for locomotives and trains. The elephant part is rather obvious. The combination of these two influential objects is how Iron Elephant Design was born.
