I grew up slightly obsessed with pop culture. And I didn't even realize it until I became an adult. I wasn't that kid who was hooked up to the TV 24 hours a day. In fact, my upbringing was slightly strict - I was the one kid who didn't grow up with a Nintendo and there were a lot of shows, movies and music that were straight up banned from the house, but everything still somehow made an impact on me. Let's face it, I grew up in the 80's and 90's. There was no avoiding pop culture.
I turned my passion for pop culture into a film degree and an eventual move to Los Angeles to pursue acting. While that didn't turn out exactly as I had planned, I did end my decade long stint in the City of Angels with a beautiful wife and 2 amazing kids. By the time we were pregnant with my son, I had put my film stardom dreams to the side and was managing a hotel full time on Sunset Blvd. But I was too artistic to not have a creative outlet. So I began painting a series of baseball paintings for my son's new nursery.
I could always draw well, but I had never painted. And because I had never painted, I had no idea what I was doing. Luckily, this lack of knowledge helped my create the unusual style you see today. I hand draw each piece, focusing on making the image as realistic as possible, then I began applying only the most basic colors I can to the piece using acrylic paints. This makes each of my pieces instantly recognizable, but also gives each piece a fresh, new and distinct look that "pops" off the canvas.
I love that pop culture can instantly transport a person back to their childhood. I'm 3 years into showing my work publicly and there is still nothing more satisfying than seeing a complete change wash over a person as soon as they are surrounded by my work.
