Design for Home and Leisure
I have been painting professionally for over thirty years, and hold a BFA degree in art and design. Through the years my husband and I have owned art galleries in Vermont, Virginia, and Ohio. My oil and acrylic paintings have evolved from realistic renderings on canvas to more interpretive, spontaneous works. Paintings range in size from miniature to grand scale, for the home or office. Light, texture, and motion are qualities I strive to achieve in each composition. A broad range of subject matter appeals to me, particularly gardens, grasses, and ponds. Sources of inspiration are always a beautiful surprise, making every day an artistic journey. I would describe my work today as contemporary realism.
In addition to fine art, I enjoy the challenge of producing wearable art. Painting on silk is much like painting a watercolor. The silk scarves I paint are one-of-a-kind designs. Creating designs on silk is a new venture for me. Since I have been a professional fine artist, painting in watercolor and oil for most of my career, handling a brush comes naturally. I love blending color combinations that are pleasing to the eye. Good composition is always foremost in my mind. I am enjoying this new medium for the beautiful effects that can be achieved, both accidentally and with purpose. Creating should always be fun. It comes from the soul and wants to be shared.
Painting on silk is a challenge and a time consuming process. Each scarf must be pre-washed, ironed, then stretched and pinned onto a wood support before dying. The shibori painting technique, which is I use in my floral designs, requires patience and a steady hand. Resist is applied to areas where the dye must not flow. The flow of paint or dye must be controlled, so as not to bleed and mix accidentally with another color. After the painting is dry, the silk must be steamed or heat set so the colors become permanent. Then the scarf is washed again, ironed, and now ready to be worn! Whew! It might be a long process, but well worth the result. Beautiful colors around your face can highlight your best features. A scarf will compliment your complexion as well as your wardrobe.
My scarves are all hand painted, one of a kind, unique designs that are never repeated. I use silk dyes and paints that are permanently color set and washable in cold water. I use the finest habotai silk, crepe de chine, or silk charmeuse in a variety of sizes. Some scarves are light and airy for spring and summer, while others have a heavier weight for colder months.
