My name is Wang, and I run this metal sign shop with my brother Winston.The “2017” in our shop name marks the beginning of our original aspiration, and it also holds a promise we made to our father.
Our father was a veteran metal craftsman. Winston and I spent our childhood tinkering away in his workshop, making keychains and engraving names out of scrap metal pieces. His words—“Put your heart into metal, and it will reward you”—have stayed with us for twenty years. When we grew up, I pursued a career in design while he studied metal forging, yet we always felt like something was missing, a lack of belonging.
In the winter of 2016, my father passed away after a serious illness. He left behind an old metal sign he had hand-forged himself, urging us, “Don’t let this craft die out.” When spring came in 2017, I quit my job, Winston closed his small store, and we pooled all our savings to rent an old factory space. That’s how JewelryDesign2017 was born—we want every metal sign to be cherished like a piece of jewelry, carrying our customers’ stories and hopes.
The early days of our business were tough. We rode electric scooters to drum up customers; Winston’s hands were covered in blisters from hours of hand-forging, while I showed clients over and over again the warmth of handcrafted textures. One memory that stands out most is when we helped an elderly lady make a memorial plaque for her late husband. We polished and refined the details repeatedly to recreate the blurry image she gave us. When she saw the finished piece, her eyes filled with tears as she said, “This is more precious than the photo itself.” That moment solidified our resolve to keep going.
Today, we still insist on handcrafting our core production processes. I handle the design, Winston takes care of the forging, and our teamwork is as seamless as ever. Next to the old metal sign hanging on the wall, shelves are filled with all kinds of sign works we’ve created.Every piece of our high-quality metal artwork starts with 16 gauge steel, cut with precision using laser technology to ensure crisp, clean details.
